Removing Scratches from Windows - can you?

A chap at work has just had his windscreen changed so was nice and new. However, the councils round here have been laying awful stones to re-tarmac. Whilst driving along some stones flicked up and got stuck in his wipers without him knowing, so when he came to putting the wipers on its scratched the new windscreen.

Any suggestions or is it a lost cause?

I remember a thread on here before about this, and someone recommended jewellery polish available from all good jewellers.

I was half-paying attention, because my screen as a few light scratches on it too.

I have had exactly the same problem with grit being thrown up, made worse by auto wipers giving a sweep when it wasn't raining.

Any sensible responses eagerly awaited.
