P/xing a car with a higher value than the one you're buying

I'm just trying to work out something as I've not done it before. If you're part-exchanging a car worth about £9k and looking at a car worth about £7k, would a dealer give you the £2k difference? I only ask as a relative is looking to chop in a massive 5-series for something smaller for a town runabout which will be worth less than the BM. Doesn't want the hassle of selling it privately, despite me pointing out they might get more for it than a dealer will offer.

I can't see why it wouldn't work, but I have a feeling there might be a snag somewhere. And yes, I'm sure the dealer will try and offer £7k for the BM!

Your best bet will be to sell it to a BMW garage or somewhere like webuyanycar.com

I attempted to do this, but it usually ends up in one of the following situations:

Either the dealer assumes that you can't afford to run the big car and therefore decides to offer you peanuts for it.

Or

The dealer continually tries to talk you into a more expensive model, so the £2k you were hoping to get back would probably end up nearer £500.

It's better to ring a load of dealers and punt the car on this way. Then buy the new car with cash.

Also (and apologies if this is stating the obvious) remember the car your buying will be at retail price, and the money you get for the BMW will be a trade price.

I would guess the car your buying will have a trade price of £5k - £6k, and the BMW would retail for £10k - £11k. Dealers have to make a profit somewhere.

Yeah, webuyanycar have offered about £9k for it (I'm assuming a dealer will be similar-ish). They're after something small for infrequent town trips now, the '5 is not really the car for that. I've suggested something like a Fiesta or Focus which are plentiful, and it must be petrol and auto. Seen one for £7k at a dealer that I've been asked to go up and look at with them.

Just wanted to know how to approach the dealer with it.

Hmm. Been out looking at other cars today and webuyanycar actually offered the best price. Took it in for a proper valuation today and they say the HPI check shows it as a parallel import..

Is there any way of proving this as they've dropped £500 off the price for it. I'm surprised as the car came from a BMW main dealer and nothing was mentioned about this when the car was purchased from them..

Are WBAC trying it on..? What's the likelihood of getting something back from the dealer if it really is a parallel import?

Parallel import would mean its an EU import but the spec is same as UK I think

Was it an Approved Used Car? I didn't "think" that they could sell an import as an approved used car, a bit like Porsche won't supposedly retail secondhand one of the Malta imports that you can often buy brand new from an independent.

Oh they do. VW where selling a batch of imported ex-rental Golfs and Jettas from the republic of Ireland earlier this year. Non UK-Spec with different wheels and no ESP, and for sale under the 'approved used' scheme.

Also seem to remember a well known large Scottish dealer importing a number of nearly-new Nissan Tiidas into the country and offering them for sale, when they are not even officially available in the UK...

Not to name and shame but... I've heard this about the place you mention..

A rep will come and view the car, and find every single tiny fault with it, then knock the price down rock bottom.

Try selling here on PH first, give it a couple of weeks, and then punt it off to the highest offer from a dealer.

Or send it to auction, but ensure all paperwork (history / MOTs / etc.) is present and correct (and available for viewing).

I almost sold a car to wbac.com in same situation. Until they phoned me about 2hrs before inspection to start chipping price, even though car was exactly as described. I didn't even get as far as the appointment

I had tried to sell my Monaro for about 6 months privately, no luck. A dealer called wanting to buy it, I was pleasantly surprised how close we got to a deal but they didn't have the right car for me.

Shopped it around all the Holden dealers in Perth over the next week and traded it for a 2 year newer Commodore (only a V6) and $17K cash back

If I could have sold it privately for what I wanted I could have bought privately cheaper, and come out maybe $2K better, but I couldn't so I was happy.

BTW I was asking $37K for the Monaro, dealer then put it on the lot at $43K... yes that is more than they were new in England
