Quick poll - 4pm friday Bristol-Bolton. To M6 toll or not?

Just about to bust my hungover self out the office and head from Brissle to Bolton (weekend on the pedal bike round the hills)

I know its a drive from hell, i know this

but tell me - M6 or M6 toll?

what do you reckon?

M6 because despite the inevitable congestion, getting to the Toll from the M5 means going round the M42, which is not great anyway. And you'll save a lot of money.

don't you just go m5 all the way up, west of brum, then pick up the M6 ....from that junction to the M6 toll is, what 5 miles? vaguely?

It's much further to take the toll, no?

IME of heading that way on a Friday evening the M5/6 junction is far freer flowing these days.

Problem is the queue to get to the M5-M6 junction can be a few miles long on the M5.

Of course he's going to get caught around Manchester too

On a Friday, between 1pm and 8pm, the Toll is worth the money.

You'll still gring to a halt where the Toll meets the M6 though!

It's a shame you're not heading to the M6 from the A14. I'd always take the M1 to 23a, A50 across to the M6 and juntion 15 and head north from there. It's an extra 11 miles, but saves you an easy half hour.

hmmm i've always just gone M6 normal (mostly because i am scottish and tight) ... maybe i'll just do the same today!

Absolutely. Last time we did the Bath-Bolton trip on a Friday we swore never to do it again. M5-M6 would be my choice nevertheless.

I do this run couple of times a week and the toll is way out of your way.
