Track Car - £1k - £2k

Yes, yes, I know... Yet another what car thread but I'm extremely bored right now and I fancy buying a track slag. It may be a bit 'pie in the sky' but maybe I'll get one

So here's the criteria:
- £1k -£2k
- age doesn't matter but I don't want it to be a nightmare to keep running. Having said that I want to get my hands dirty
- whilst I appreciate that MX5 is the default option ... Maybe not.

Options so far:
- BMW E36 >320
- Renault Clio 172

Anything else to consider?

106GTI? Having said that, the 172 is probably a better choice

Hadn't thought of 106/306 GTIs but I do tend to think a 172 would be a better option.

Not all that keen on the mk2 MR2, I'm sure it would be a great option but doesn't float my boat

Another couple of hundred would have it fitted with a VTS engine and a very capable track performer!

CRX Mk2 (16v, before VTEC model). If you're lucky, you'll find a CRX Cup car!

I'd recommend a Nissan 200.

Try and find one thats already been used as a track car and had the main things done already.


We did this with a Golf gti and then a 205 gti both of which had already been prepared (roll cage suspension etc) so all we had to do was minor stuff like sort brakes, tyres etc. The Golf (mk2 8v) and the 205 (1.9 gti) both were reliable and stood up to many track days, often with 2 or three people driving so was heavily used. Parts were cheap.

Went rwd after that with a nissan 200sx mk1 which was suprisingly capable once the brakes and suspension were sorted, it was more expensive on parts than the other two but much more fun to play with being rwd with an lsd and about 200 bhp and proved very reliable.

Main thing is if you only have a limited budget buy something thats already been prepped.
