So I went to an auction on Friday and got a bit excited...

and ended up buying two cars...

I want to not really drive the F during the winter so I decided to get a little run around, was looking at a nice 182 Clio but I digress...

Any way, I ended up buying a BMW 320td ES with M sport wheels but poverty interior. It has done 150k, is a 53 plate and I got it for 2600 quid. (plus a little buyer's premium i believe)

I also got a W reg MX5 in silver with 60k on it for 1200 quid. That is the one I think I did best on. Anyway, we'll see tomorrow when I go to pick them up. I don't know about any of the history apart from the fact that they're both taxed and tested.

Not sure what to do about the Beemer, I will need to add bluetooth etc and also the cloth interior is nasty. I suppose I'll go and post in that section to see what the best course of action is with that.

So, what's the verdict? Is that an OK couple of purchases? I don't really need the MX5 but you guys never shut up about them and I reckon my sisters will enjoy driving it. Couldn't leave it there at 1200 really.

Oh, it's a 1.6 not a 1.8.

Blimey...! I'm getting excited just reading that. Having just sold an e36 318i conv. for £2400 privately, sounds like you have done extremely well. Enjoy.
I'm trying to convince myself that I can manage and juggle family life with one car. Reading threads like this and the bargain barge thread are very dangerous for me. Someone else flagged a very tidy 728i for under £3000 facelift.
I wonder whether a little visit to the Auctions in Brum around New Year may be in order...?

As a newbie to auctions, do you have to do anything like register to buy, or just turn up and bid on what you like? Thanks

BCA just turn up and buy...but you will need £500 for a depposit on all purchases cash or card.

Well I went to a little auction place on the Wandsworth bridge...and you just needed to have £300 in cash in order to bid. No registration or anything. I think a lot of the cars there are from private sellers who have to give the final go ahead once the auction is over.

Anyway, a good experience. I am just worried maybe with the mileage of the beemer it was overpriced but oh well. It's less than the deposit i paid when i leased my audi so actually it's peanuts for a modern car.

If a car doesn't reach reserve if it gets close the auctioneer will check with the vendor.

At auctions, all human life is there. BCA and Manheim aren't too bad, some of the smaller auctions could easily provide enough material for David Attenborough's next series.

It's hilarious. There are some real tossers, there's always a bloke who pushes past everyone to look at every car in minute detail, enters 2 low bids and then gives up. I'd love for his bluff to be called on something pricey.

Ihe closer someone inspects what's under the bonnet, the less likely they'll buy a car.
