Jag XF or 5-Series F10

Looking for a stylish, quick, well specced car to replace our 55 plate 530d M Sport.

Budget of £30,000 to £35,000.

Not hugely impressed with Audi's and been BMW through and through but looking at a Jag.

So options are:

6-12mth old Jaguar XF S circa 5,000 miles all the toys. £33000
6mth old 520d SE F10, average spec, 7,000 miles £32,000
6mth old 530d SE F10, good spec, 5,000 £38,000!

Does the latest Jaguar XF really stack up against the 5-series?

Ideally I would want a new 530d M Sport when prices are more realistic in a year or so but must get one this year.

I have driven both but not extensively and the Jag felt the more special car from the drivers seat. Have autocar done a comparison as yet as that may well be worth a read.

By the reviews, they stack up well, and if you're looking at the diesel S, I think, pace wise they are closer to the 535d.

I've just been given the use of a 2.7d XF while my XJR is in.

And, if my XJR can't be sorted, I'd be very interested in the XF, I think the SV8s are quite cheap now the XFR is out.

Either that or the diesel S.

If I had to pick a saloon in this class it would be:
1. Jaguar XF
2. Jaguar XF
3. Jaguar XF
4. BMW 5-Series
5. Mercedes E-Class
6. Audi A6

I'd take the Jaguar on looks alone - the fact that the reviews say it drives well too, well that's a bonus.

I've spent 3 full days with two different examples of the F10 530d and I really, really like it. Having not tried a Jag I can't compare, but the F10 is a definite step forward in ride and refinement from the E60.

I'm not up on current pricing but will your budget stretch to the newer diesel? Great engine.

For the first time in many years, that question is the other way around: can the 5 series compete with the XF. And its also the same with the XJ and the 7 series

My dad went through the same thing a couple of months ago.

In the end he went for the XF-S, premium Luxury, With a couple of extras such as the B&W sound system, and few others.

It really is an awesome car, looks great on the 20" wheels, so smooth, and quick, I was really impressed. His previous car was an ML320 CDI, and the Jag is really leagues ahead, in the way of performance, ride quality, and build quality.

I've done many, many miles in both. The Jag feels more special, handles better at speed and has a lot more road presence. They're handling all the rough and tumble as well.

Given that the XF & the XJ are outselling all the competition whilst not pandering to the fleet market says it all. It would have to be an XF S for me.

Yep. Good list. Though I'd slip the Citroen C6 in at 4 ahead of your 4, 5 and 6.

My father has a similar choice, although not BMW. He went for the XF-S to replace his Monaro.

Its a cracking car. As it is the newer diesel engine he finds that in normal day to day driving the XF is quicker than the Monaro.

My Dad went from being a Merc man 20 years ago, to a BMW man.
Six years ago he wanted to sell his E39 5-series and get something "newer". He bought an S-Type over the E60 because it felt more special.

When he replaced the S-Type last year, he bought an XF 3.0D - it's bloody brilliant!

Assuming it's an XF-S, and his father previously owned a non-VXR Monaro, then the XF-S is (ever-so) slightly quicker to 60 (5.9s vs 6.0s) and probably quicker mid-range.
