Keeping a car abroad for 6 months a year

Ok, here's an interesting one. A buddy of mine are considering going halves on a track car. The plan is to keep it at the Nurburgring over the summer and back in the UK over winter. We've got a couple of options for storage in Germany and also in the UK, so that's ok.

The area we're not 100% with so far, is the insurance/legal/tax side of things.

All car insurance policies I've seen allow a maximum of 90 days green card European cover. Have I not been looking hard enough?

Do we have to "repatriate" the car regularly to get around some kind of legal issue? I'm sure I've ready this somewhere...

Do we still need UK road tax for the 6 months the car will be kept abroad?

Is there anything else I need to consider?

It needs to be legal in the country where it's registered even if out of the country.. so if you have in Germany and on UK plates then it needs MOT, Road Tax and Insurance.

Insurance might be an issue but there are some out there which don't limit you to 90 days.. and I think the 90 days is a limit to fully comp by law they have to give you the minimum cover no matter what so you'd have 3rd party.

That said it might be cheaper to actually insure it with a German insurer even though it's on UK plates... or even cheaper to transfer it to German plates and therefore have it fully legal in Germany and keep it on German plates in the UK and gain "certain exemptions".

I don't know the process of transfering UK to German plates.
