I was driving through Surrey at the weekend down a country road and I drove around this corner to find a cow stood in the middle of the road! Luckily I managed to miss it and drive on but I think later someone must have crashed into it because the road was closed with an ambulance. If I had hit the cow whose fault is it? It must be the farmer for not keeping it locked up?? How stupid must he be to let it just walk around free!

It is the farmers responsibility to fence against his own stock. Any insurance claims will be made against the owner of the animal IIRC

There is that quaint old recommendation about being able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear.

Farmers need to maintain their fences, but a determined cow (especially one which has just been parted with its calf) will plough through barbed wire and hedges if adequately riled.

Did you not stop to and try to usher the cow into a nearby field?

When out on the bike around here sheep are always a hazard, any strays are shoved into the nearest field!

I once hit a horse pulling a trap/carriage thing when it bolted out of a side-street into a main road front of me in Blackpool. I hit the trap not the horse fortunately, as the animal was a biggun. Apparently the horse got spooked by something further back and the guy in control just bailed... it galloped off down the street with the trap pinging left and right between parked cars all the way down, and then out right in front of me at full pelt. I didn't actually st myself but it was close. The guy was held liable for deliberately losing control of the horse. i.e. he chose to jump out. He had to pay for all the damage... well, I say that... being almost certainly a gyppo he almost certainly never paid a penny.

Did you not consider calling the police and report there was a cow on the road?

A cow hit at 60mph would quite easily go though the windscreen.

Look on the bright side, if the cow had written your car off you wouldn't have to fillet up again.

Well, 'tis reasonable advice in the country. I had the same thing at the weekend - except it wasn't a cow, it was a couple of old biddies collecting blackberries on the inside of a tight bend on a narrow road!

Should have alerted the farmer, you'd have got a big pat on the back.
