Tyre Speed Rating - Higher is cheaper?

My brother was looking at tyre prices earlier for his ST and noticed that the same tyre but with a W rating was far cheaper than the one with the V rating. I assumed that the higher speed rated tyre would need extra strengthing and would therefore cost more. Anyone know why its cheaper?

Is there also any reason not to have a higher speed rating than what the manual says?

Maybe they sell more of the higher rated one? Although I cant see why they would make different speeds of the same tyre!

I suspect it is to do with how many they sell. Higher speed rating can be a slightly different compound though in my experience, so might not feel the same.

Well there wasnt a specific tyre. However if you went to Etyres for instance and put in tyre size of 215/45/VR17 and then looked at the same tyres but 215/45/WR17, the W's are far cheaper.
