£12k choices

So....

You've got £12k to spend.

You want something that looks sporty but not a two-seater sports car necessarily. However you like cars that are styled with some aggression e.g. Toyota MR2 MK2, Honda NSX, Mitsubishi 3000GT. You also like elegant coupes like the Volvo C70. Essentially you like 2 door cars the most and not keen on the idea of anything from BMW, Merc, Lexus, and Audi.

You want it to be low-ish mileage - ideally under 30,000 miles. The road tax must not be £435 per year so if its high emissions then it must be pre-2006. But £12k is roughly where you want to be.

So far you have thought about:

Subaru Impreza (but pre-2006 styling looks really dated)

Perhaps consider an Alfa GTV (saving a few quid for when things break), a decent supra, lotus esprit (risky), Maser 3200, 944 Turbo

You could get an S2 Elise for that, but despite it meeting the criteria I get the feeling that's not really the kind of car you're after.

Okay heres why Volvo....

The S60R - its very rare, has AWD, 300bhp, all the luxury. Its also cheap if I can find a decent example.
C70 - the original one looks amazing. the new one gives me choice of convertible and coupe. 2 doors and luxury. its cheap for what it is and looks more expensive than it is.
C30 T5 - too many similar looking models like a ford focus, but everyone wets their pants over the ST. This is an ST but better looking and has a coupe profile which is what I like.

The Volvos I was just thinking of when searching. Will probably not go for one though.

Thinking about Toyota Celica GT as well. But again they are common as muck.
