Owning up to damaging someone's car.

If you accidently hit another parked car in a car park and caused some damage, lets assume you scratched the wing mirror and broke an indicator cover that was on the mirror, would you try to contact them or just drive off?

Not that I make a habit of it, thinking about it, I've only ever caught another car once, about eight years ago.

always, but the number of dints/scuffs on my cars indicate that 99% of the population would not....

I have never been in this situation but my dad has (with me), took us 30 minutes to find the guy in a house round the corner.

If through some cack-handed accident, I did damage someone else's car, I would leave a note or knock on their door. Some plank reversed into my brother's car, got out and inspected the damage to both cars and then drove off - shame for him we saw his numberplate. Would have been much easier and surely less humiliating just to have knocked on our door there and then, rather than be confronted with questioning as to why he left the scene of an accident.

I reversed into a brand new A3 about three years ago in a car park - it was just gravel / field with no spaces at a show. Had to make a quick exit as I was late so jumped in the car and reversed out the space to find someone had parked an A3 in the road / access row to the rest of the cars.

Should have looked etc but I was inexperienced / rushing / not concerntrating etc.

Left a note with my number - old boy rang up, sent quotes, I sent a check for £300 odd and got one back for £200 odd as his mate did it as there was no structural damage to the bumper

I would hate to come back to my car and find damage - once did, but found the car with my paint in the same carpark - offered the guy a chance to own up or I'll request the CCTV - he paid for the repair

Girlfriend scratched a neighbours bumper once. She wanted:

A new bumper
A full rear end respray

All had to be done at a main dealer, with a hire car and she wanted compensation for having to deal with it.

SWMBO rammed the towbar of her car through the grille of another car just before Christmas.

To be honest, the damage wasn't actually that noticeable, but it was what seemed to be a new car.

So I left a note hoping that the driver wouldn't care too much and leave it at that.

Turned out to be a main dealer's demonstrator and it had to be repaired to showroom spec'!! £250 later for the part and labour to fit it!!! :'(

Another one the bloke called me to thank me for leaving the note but not to worry about paying for the chip my son had caused on his door when the wind blew the door out of his hand.

I always leave a note. But it's always because of someone else.

I've had a couple of dings where people have scarpered afterward. That pissed me off. But the 3 worst ones have left a note, and I've felt slightly better disposed toward the human race immediately after.

I suppose I would do the same. But then it's unlikely to happen because I'm such an amazing driver. AMAZING.

I knocked the mirror of a BMW once as I passed a bit too close on a country lane. There was only 2 houses and nobody answering the door (maybe elderly or scared?)

There was no damage to the mirror, luckily it had pinged out of its housing. I put it back and left the scene.

Anymore damage and I'd leave a note, and record the reg though. Karma always come around.

Caught a people carrier pulling into a car parking space at ASDA and scratched the rear bumper and wing a little. Wrote a note with my number on it and as I put it under his windscreen wiper he returned to his car. I explained what had happened and just said, "Well, it's got so many already another one won't matter" and I never heard from him again. I think owning up has to be done, and sometimes I think the honesty helps reduce the punishment, karma and all that
