question about bluefin device

HI phers i have a quick question

If i purchase a bluefin from the main retailer they ask for uour car details(make,mode,engine,etc), so what im trying to say is can i buy a preowned one which was on any n/a car (obviously not using a n/a one on a turbo engine) and fit it to my ford focus or do i have to get one which has been fitted to a ford focus and is the same model,engine etc

Any reply on this will be much appreciated

I'm guessing the software on the kit is pre set to your car make model. It may just be an adjustment of settings but the initial process of installing the right software may be done by Bluefin themselves. The site doesn't say anything about universal fitments although I'd be quite keen to know what options the software driver gives when installed on your PC.

There must be safeguards against loading say a VW map on a Ford, so I don't see how you can pick any one and use it on your car. I doubt the device has the capacity to store multiple maps.

You might be able to purchase the device and reload it with a map of your choice for a total cost less than a new one.

No personal experience, so it's just guesswork.

If buying second hand, you will have to buy one that already has a map for your car (make, model and engine) You can buy any second hand one and have bluefin put the right map on the divice for your car. This isnt that cheap IRC so dont buy a second hand one unless its a good amount less than a new one. Also I think you only get 3 or 4 uses out of one before the map has to be loaded to the device again (at cost). I maybe wrong about that last part as its a while since I was researching re-mapping.

As for as quality of the product goes, I heard nothing but good reports about the maps being used on focus deisels (what I had when looking into this kinda thing) In the end I plumped for a map from celtic tuning, seemingly better gains for a similar price and they came highly recomended. I would happily recomend them to others too.

As far as I know if you buy a used one you need to pay superchips to reset the unit for your car regardless of whether you buy one that was for the same engine or not. The only way to confirm this 100% would be to ring bluefin but I believe it is easier to buy a new one. Also the unit would possibly not fit the Ford connection port if it was for a VW/Audi etc.

There are also a number of alternatives to the bluefin that may be better value, and remapping an NA car is fairly unproductive in a pounds per bhp gained way.

There are better generic remaps than bluefin.

And some can be used more than once, obviously not at the same time

The bluefin locks itself to the first car it is used on. From then on, it can only be used on that particular vehicle.

As has been already stated, Superchips will reset the device for you, and you can then purchase a new map, but the cost of all this means it is almost as expensive as buying a new one.

Personally i'd go for a new unit, as you will also get the backup of Superchips support, on the off chance that something goes wrong. I have heard the odd story of uploads going wrong, and cars being immobilised.

I know that a focus st bluefin can certainly only be used on the originally intended vehicle, unlike dreamscience which you can use up to 4 times and can be a real bargain in eBay and the like

I have been on the bluefin website and the jkm site and it looks like the best option is to just go for the brand new option especially when you consider costs of reseting plus you get 12 months warranty and have superchips suppoert if something does go wrong

So putting the order in straight after my night shift thanks phers

Sorry where are manners thanks total control and you are right about it being set to make and model and you do have to pay for a reset
