What car.. (sorry!) 1k max

I'm in need of a 'shed' to run alongside the VX.. carting kids around, tip runs etc... I'm thinking a decent sized saloon should fit the bill.

Thoughts so far:

E36 3 series
Omega
Accord

I've a dislike of autos and diesel so would prefer manual/petrol...

Any suggestions or definite "Avoids" to the above options?

VW Passat, my mums is a shed, abused from day to day it on 250k and never misses a beat... brillant car
