Sorry!!! What 4x4 ??

Should be fairly easy this...

Want a 4X4 for around £1k to £3k tops..

Will only do around 2 to 3 mile a day if any at all some times, but then must be able to lug childrens bikes inside plus occasional luggage and reliably start each time!!

Also the occasional camping trip with a good few miles travelling 200/300 miles so must be supremely reliable

So I've narrowed it down to what I fancy:- Again...reliability is key...

Landrover Discovery or Range Rover ??

Shogun

Nissan x trail

Jeep Grand Cherokee

Toyota Landcruiser

For this budget I'd imagine a Vauxhall Frontera. The pre-facelift diesels are rough but from people I know who've had them bloody indestructible as long as they've been reasonably well serviced. The post facelift ones are supposed to be more refined and are a bit smarter looking, but from what I hear can be prone to electrical gremlins. Don't take my word on that though.

Wasn't the Frontera one of the most unreliable cars ever built?

I used to see a lot on the road, now hardly any...

As far as I know, the later ones were not great reliability-wise, particularly regarding electrics. That is pretty much based upon internet hearsay though (they were surprisingly cheap for me to insure when I passed my test so looked into them quite a lot )


However, I know one family who had an L reg Frontera from nearly new, 2.3 diesel. Very much abused but an excellent workhorse, and 120,000 fault-free miles.

Someone else I know has a 2.8 diesel one in much better nick, and again as far as I know hasn't had any problems.

Had a Ford Explorer last year, just bought for a towing job....cost £750 and dove to the South of France and back twice....was remarkably good, and quite pleasant

Usually a few on Ebay, and the best ones are less than £2k...there are a couple of specilaists around as well.

There is an issue with rattling cam chains, so get one that's been done...and they are a bit 'American' which isn't to everyones taste.

We got about 25mpg on slow average....about 16 with 2 tons of old car & trailer behind it.
