I don't know why but I have had a crazy idea...

Take my volvo s40 (with knackered engine etc), strip out everything but the seats, fit my 2.8 V6 audi's engine/gearbox in the back, wire up the flappy paddle box to the front of the volvo with a custom dashboard or probably just the existing volvo one.

Brakes, steering etc

SVA it, Q plate it.

have the ultimate sleeper, a boggo volvo s40, thats actually mid-engined with a flappy paddle box.

What do you think?

What would the insurance be like on a self-built Q-Plate based on a volvo?

Tell me this is a bad idea, or i may just get the welding set out this weekend....

Try an leave the interio as intact as possible, but make the (rear) engine cover look like a Tartan Blanket (over the seats and parcel shelf) or a picnic hamper or something.

A true PHer needs no justification! If you have a dead engined car, and a spare engine, the only logical solution is to shove it in the boot and sleeper it!

You have my blessing - go ahead! Ideally, start it 5 minutes after the wife has gone to work so that by the time she returns, you are way past the point of no return. A few days later, emerge from the garden shed and invite her in to oggle at the masterpiece. It can only go well! Get welding, my man!

It would be one hell of a job to cut out the floorpan, fabricate and install a subframe, relocate the fuel tank, fit a custom loom, design a cooling system and get it all to work (I'm sure there would be other stuff that would need doing, new fire wall, etc.)

However, it could be a lot of fun. Though to be honest, I'd put some sort of V8 in there...

Will it actually be much quicker than a S40 T4? That had around 200bhp I think. The 2.8 V6 won't be producing much more than that will it?

Having said that - do it anyway! It'll be a one off. Nobody else has a Voudi. Should that be a Aulvo. Actually, they just sound like discount supermarkets.

But its the on-road bit I'm worried about.
the outer shell should be ok (standard volvo), but firewall's etc for the engine bay, the actual design of the engine subframe etc, how difficult is that?

EFA - its a 2004 S40 (current shape, pre facelift), see below!

Im thinking with stripping the volvo out etc, it would be faster, plus I have very little cash but donor car and volvo shell(well, whole car) plus the flappy paddle appeals to me, and the supercharger option on the Audi!

Also can sell bits off both cars to fund the steelwork/SVA etc.

Only Insurance I'm concerned about, can't claim it has no modifications!!!

Its a Peugeot 306, and non-turbo Saab, although I was looking at putting the turbo off the other 8v Saab we had on the 16v engine in the car.

It went like stink in 1st gear, but I had no clutch and couldn't figure a reliable way of completing the gear-change!

yeah, i probably could, but I bought a V8 Range rover, so that became my main project, then mum and dad divorced so I lost my playground

Now I'm itching to do another project, but have no cash so looking at what i have, this is the idea that came into my head....

Not that there is anything wrong with the audi, thats a sleeper in itself as it looks like an old audi but goes like stink...

I have considered a kit car, but couldn't afford the "Kit"

You want to do all that expensive custom work and all you're worried about is insurance costs....

Looked at unfinished Kits, all seem out of my price range (ZERO)

Fab work would cost me £200 in steel (bit of tube/box and some sheet!

Leather from audi would net at least £50 surely
Engine/gearbox from volvo (even in its semi-running state) would fetch £200?
bodyshell from audi is £50 scrap
Doors/boot/bumpers from audi £10 each? thats £70

plus the thought of a stripped out volvo that looks totally boggo but with that V6 lump really appeals to me!!!

Insurance on the standard audi is £2000/year, so yes insurance is my main worry!
