Got a loyalty card from Shell recently as I only buy Shell fuel and I got sick of being asked if I had one.

I've noticed reluctance by some cashiers to swipe the card before payment.

Not sure why.

Today the bloke puts the card on the till while I pay by cc.

He then tells me to put the card into the pin machine after I've paid and take it straight out again.

I don't think that's going to do anything.

Should I hunt him down and kill him or consider myself lucky that he didn't piss on the card as well?

However it may as well do nothing for the benefits you get.

I don't know.. I get a £5 fuel voucher most quarters from my points. Better than nothing just for a swipe of a card when you fill up?

It's a slight of hand trick, he cloned the credit card.

The card will register if swiped either on their keyboard or via the magnetic strip in the Chip'n'Pin device.
Check your receipt - it'll tell you if the card registered or not...

Does it cost the garage to add points to your card or something?

I threw my attendant a curve ball by having a Mirror £2 off voucher and my shell card.

What happened to the stuff you used to be able to collect points for? I still have my (model) Mclaren F1 and XJ220 my grandad painstakingly saved up for!

I remember those from years ago at esso garages. I got Space Invaders on the original Gameboy, and some mugs.

I have the Esso card and usually get about £15 per quarter which i use for Argos,B&Q or debenhams vouchers (well my wife uses them)
I am in the same position that i need to use Shell so i may as well get the free benefit.

Im in the v power club and noticed at times when they go to do the card thing they hand it back then ask for it again after i have paid. Sometimes not sure they know what they are doing.

The fuel discounts are handy though

Personally I think they are crap.

£4 a quarter on ~£380 odd quid of VPower isn't worth it, especially when I can get Tesco 99 for ~£360 without going out of my way.

Waste of time for me. Got a card when they first came out, registered it, wouldn't swipe.

Got another. Thought "Ah fekkit" and threw it in the bin.

As long as the bottom of your receipt doesn't say 'you could have earned xx points in this transaction' or something similar, then I think you will be fine.

Shame they got rid of the Shell/Citi cashback credit card. Twas 3% on all fuel purchases from Shell, and it meant i always used Shell.

Now i get whatever is most convenient.

When I had the focus st for a company car and was doing 75k a year filling up with 50 quid or so nearly every day the most I got in free fuel vouchers was 25 pounds, the rest was discount and bogof for screenwash or oil !

Live near just north of stansted in essex during the week, commuting to m25 a23 junction daily, friday nights back home to newcastle, then back on sunday, the weekend trip is 275 miles each way, and the commute was roughly 175, but if out on site visits I could clock 250 miles in a day easily !!

Oh great. I picked one of these up today after putting in £100 of V-Power. Thought I was about to enter a world of marvellous discounts only to now discover that I am a mug. Damn it.

Oof a 100 nicker to fill up that must be painfull if its out of your own pocket !!
