Help! I've Buggered up a paint job.
Discussion
Hi guys, a little help required! I recently dinged my panther black focus. Nothing major, so didn't have to worry about filler or anything. Just sanded the offending area, masked up and applied 2 coats of prime. So far, so good! Allowed to dry for an hour and encouraged process with hairdryer. Repeated the same procedure with correct paint and laquer. Now, for some reason, the paint is more like matt bloody black and looks awful! I fear that I didn't leave enough time between painting and laquering (about an hour with aid of hairdryer). Is there any hop that it'll look ok by the morning? lol. Cheers.

No, none. There's little chance of you improving things with further rattle can attempts either.Assuming you're on a tight budget you might want to investigate Chips Away or similar 'smart' repair types.
You'll need to flat it back with 1200 wet and dry using a block and slightly soapy water (you should also have flatted the primer before the paint).
Be very careful not to put too much pressure on it when sanding and check with your hand until it's nice and smooth.
Once you've done that you'll need to buff it up with a mild compound. T-cut should do but I've used meguiars ultimate compound with good results. Once you're done with that give it a polish and it should be a lot better.

Pay a professional to do it.
Sorry to be so blunt, but you're already getting off-kilter advice here, whatever you do, it'll be unlikely to improve. Try flatting & polishing and I can almost guarantee you'll take the lacquer off. If your lucky, you'll only damage the paint you've applied, if you're unlucky, you'll damage the original paint.
It'll probably cost around £100 for a smart repair guy to make it good, sounds like it'll be money well spent.

waste of money doing it yourself will never look good cost a fortune on crap aerosols from helfords de value your car then you have to pay a pro more money to correct it you wouldnt pull your own teeth out would you ?
i did once. wanted the money from the tooth fairy earlierHi. I'm also doing a panther black (pearlescent) repair at the moment. The can says spray on the black, allow 24 hours, use 1200 grade wet & dry (obviously goes completely matt) & then apply lacquer. My question is, after 1200 grade wet & drying the black paint, should I T-cut it to shine it up before applying the lacquer?

Don't use any polish or cutting agents after wet flatting. You need to use panel wipes, remove grease and oils. Once dry and clean, check for any hairs or bugs, then clear coat.OlberJ said:

Buy a white car. Much easier to paint. Black is a total nightmare.
Metalic black is the work of Satan.
You're kidding, right?Metalic black is the work of Satan.
Black is black.
White can be about 100 different shades.
Pay a pro to do it if it's not something you've practised. Lots.

if youve done a reasonble job with the correct stuff , then it should buff up to a reasonble shine
aerosol clear never shines well from the can
This.aerosol clear never shines well from the can
Leave it a couple of days. I'd then start with something like 2000 grade wet and dry then proceed to cutting polish of some sort. You'd be surprised what you can "save"

White is very forgiving of imperfections.
Black shows up every tiny spec of dust/insect/child's thumbprint.
Why do you think most vans are white? It's because it's dead easy and cheap to paint. It's also why vans rust so badly. They only get a couple of coats because the manufacturers know they can get away with it.
Anyway, sorry for ramble but if you're using rattle cans, white can look ok, black will be a total b
d and probably look crap. Solid non-metallic colours are somewhere between the two.Trust me, I've got lots of experience of doing crap spray bodges.
