Tell me about Corolla 1.6 GTi's

My first post but long time lurker on PH, I am looking for a daily snotter to do a 60mi commute on B roads, mainly to keep the miles of my other car and for winter use. Seeing as we had loads of snow in East Anglia last year I was looking at n/a Impreza'a and Legacy's, but then decided a hatch with winter tires will do the trick too. I looked at Mk2/3 Golfs but can't find any unmolested ones nearby that are decent.
Yesterday I drove past a Corolla 16v GTi, it's J reg, been sitting in a forecourt since April but was MOT'd in May, it even has some moss starting to grow on it. It's bright red, paint looks good, it has 125k miles and all looks standard except the wheels I think. I called the seller and he said he was after £800 for it. I did a quick search and these seem pretty rare, are they decent, what goes wrong with them? I've heard steering is light on them and the arches can rust, anyone know anything about these, why are they so rare?

Shed of the week is your friend. I'd stay away from the Corolla, there's a reason it has moss growing on it. I think the word rare conjures up the idea of a car also being desirable, that Corolla isn't a rare collectors' item, there aren't many around because it's a boggo piece of s

They are not that bad to be honest, and screwed together better than any boggo golf, A mate had one for several years and it was a good solid little car, it went pretty well and it had a better dash/interior than the Golfs/Escorts and 205's of the time.
If you can get a couple of hundred off the asking, and check the brakes aren't seized solid it could well be worth a punt

126BHP MR2 Mk 1 engine as mentioned earlier by Gravel Ben.
They look pretty bland in true Toyota tradition but were actually a good hot hatch in their day.
£800 sounds a lot if its mouldy, but a good one will hold its money as they are rare now.
Other Jap hot hatches at that time were the Sunny GTI (2.0), Mazda 323 Gti (1.8), Mitsubishi Colt GTI (1.6 and later 1.8) The first 2 were supposed to be pretty good too. Honda Civic 1.6-16 or later VTis are good but have a following so are pricey.
Remember these are all revvy jap motors and wont feel as torquey as a MK3 Golf GTI, but will be good fun.

Lovely car - similar performance to a MK1 MR2 with hatchback practicality. My Brother had one from 75k to 125k. It was getting a little tired when he sold it, but still running pretty well. Apart from the clutch around 76k, nothing major fell off in the time he owned it, and he has no mechanical sympathy. Just look for rust, rear wheel arches, tailgate seem to be the obvious places.

According to the road tests when they were new, about 120 mph max and between 8.2 -> 9.2 for the 60 sprint. They do seem to rust quite easily. They look pretty bland in true Toyota tradition but were actually a good hot hatch in their day.

Performance Car (old EVO ) had a 4-way test of one up on the Heads of the Valleys road in Wales back in 1989. 309Gti beat the others for driver's car, Golf Gti won as a long-term ownership proposition. ISTR the Corolla was rated better than the Mitsubishi Colt also included.
The rwd GT would be lots more fun ...but also loads more money!
Yeah £800 or so is a bit much for a moldy car, but under that it seems ok, had a look through the windows on a rainy day and it all looked dry inside. I'll have to take it for a drive, if there are no major issues with it I might offer around £550. The regular 1600's were very popular in South Africa when I was growing up (my sister had a brand new one in '96) and they still made them until a couple of years ago along with the early shaped Golf's. Funny how they are so rare here, there seem to be lot of the later bug eyed ones about, which look worse I think.
