Garage space.... too much money

Im getting mighty pissed off with the ridiculous amounts people are charging in and around brighton for a single garage with no elc or lighting.

I am considering renting a commercial unit as they offer decent space for the money, light, elec and also some of them have use of toilets and kitchen. the prices are not much more if shared with another person too and you could actually do some work on the car. anyone done this before? any drawbacks?

I guess you would also have to pay business rates. Might be worth it though.

Similar problem down here in Plymouth, garage rates are ridiculous. I've often wondered what the costs would be for renting your standard industrial unit and sharing it out with a few like minded PH type mates with a few different cars, wouldn't there be a few of these going empty and/or cheap given there's supposed to be a recession on?

Have you tried applying for a council lock-up? My brother applied to Sussex County Council and got one for £80 a month.

brighton council have them for 17.50 a week. but they are a ridiculous size. i want one to work on the car not just simply drive in it and get out of the car via the roof/window as i cant open the door

i think i have been spoilt from my youth my family used to own a garage so we always had space to work on cars either over the pit or ramp etc. im getting mightly annoyed at the amount of time it takes to even just jack a car up to work on it. i dont think my neighbours are best pleased either as its a communal parking area.

there are lots of unused places about up for rent but id not be able to afford it on my own, id even use a farm barn but try googling that you just come up with bespoke yuppy pads rather than a shed full of hay.

might have to bite the bullet and move to get a double garage. Sea container would be a good idea but i live in the south East england. id prob need a bloody mortgage to rent the land.
