Ok here is the scenario. If you declare your car sorn and it is off road on your drive or garage do you need to insure it with car INS or will your house INS cover it?

If it is house INS do you have to note it as an item over £2.5k ?

I'm asking as a friend has a number of cars sorn and on his drive as he is awaiting to sell them but in the interim they are uninsured and clearly untaxed.
I'm concerned if they were damaged or stolen they wouldn't be covered by the house INS. He isn't well off and certainly couldn't afford three car INS policies over his current lifestyle. Now I don't want to jump to conclusions or worry him incorrectly instead I'm asking the ph knowledge what's the real deal here so I can let him know and ensure the worst doesn't happen.

I was told that house insurance can never cover cars, but car insurers will cover them at a reasonable cost if they aren't actually driven.

I thought that you still had to insure a car even if its off the road / SORN'd.

If the car is out of the public domain, then no, it doesnt need to be insured or MOT'd, but DVLA will want it to be SORN'd. I dont know of any household insurance policies that will provide cover for the car, even if its in a garage attached to your house, but a lot of motor insurance companies offer "lay-up" insurance specifically for this type of scenario. Ring round and you should be able to find something

as in a legal requirement?

Three years ago I kept a sorn car in the locked garage I didn't insure it but it was worth £50 so clearly no point in doing so and it was a non runner hgf major bad hgf no power what so ever needed full revs in 1st to barely move !!
