To be honest, it is unbelievably shortsighted by the DVLA or whoever comes up with this.08

For many people out there trying to work out what year a 73 plate car is would totally throw them, surely they should have just made the plate slightly longer and put the full year in.
Better yet, why the hell bother with 2 changes a year, just get back to one. I don't think there can be that many people that are sad enough to want the latest plate any more which I thought was the reason they did it.

Quite why they felt the need to replace years AD with with some new numbering system which works differently to everything else is beyond me. Keeps someone in a job, I suppose.

Wrong way round, they got rid of the single change to two in order to spread car sales more evenly throughout the year. Fleet and private buyers would cane the market in Aug/Sept and leave it the rest of the year. A car with a Y plate might only be a month newer than one with X plate but will command more on the second hand market...that's where the benefit lay, and it adds up if you're a fleet buyer.

Given the current system's numerically limited shelflife, it'd surely be far better to just use the last two digits of the year: 09, 10, 11. We'd be ok for another 90 years then. If they want two registrations per year, just suffix it with an A or a B.RobM77 said:

The major change this time was the Area codes changed and instead of a year letter we got two numbers. The advantage of all these schemes is that they don't "collide" with the previous issuing schemes

. However, it doesn't stop the current system being 2 digits for a cryptic code (06, 56 etc), whereas three digits could explain everything simply (06A, 06B etc). I'd go for the simpler version everytime if it just increases the total digit count from 7 to 8.I'd hazard a guess that within the next 90 years. Number plates will all but be replaced by some form of electronic tracking chipping, constantly being monitored in some way.
Haven't a clue what or how, but I'm sure the current archaic method will definitely be phased out, or at least massively evolve within this century.

Why bother with dated registrations at all? Plenty of other countries live without. The VIN is enough to identify the car so its year of first registration is easily tracked. They moved from one date change to two to prevent a rush of new car sales in September. Goes without saying that without dated registrations at all, car sales would be averaged out smoothly throughout all 12 months of the year. The two number year makes select registrations even more pointless than they were under the prefix system. The new system is silly and the plates are ugly. Come to mention it the area coding makes no sense to man nor beast either.
As an aside, the French have just ruined their plates by going back to white back and front (from yellow rear and white front) and putting the department number separately in a subscript box rather than making it part of the main number. I think that's why all the unions are striking over there!
