Driving to work the other day nice and early in the morning, clear roads etc I couldn't resist having a hoon down the dual carriage. After 5 miles or so I hit the end of the stretch and start merging to single lane, as I look in my mirror I see a grey focus st coming over the hill at pace. Looks undercover I think to myself and sure enough on come the blue lights behind me followed by the usual 'sinking feeling'! I pulled over tail between legs and go to 'review my speeds' in the officers car. Straight away I see triple figure speeds on the screen and am told by the officer it would have been higher if he could have kept up. By now I'm stting it and waiting for the raping of a life time! After a chat with me being very apologetic and polite I'm sent on my way with three points and a fine, the officer decided I was not driving in a dangerous manner. I was very lucky to meet a reasonable and friendly officer, It's certainly made me think twice before putting my foot down!

i've had a similar feeling sat in the back of a cop car!

lucky escape! makes a change to read this rather than 'it's not faaaaaaaair they booked me at 90mph but the cops hat was not straight can i get off it somehow'

There are always good cops. I got pulled over at 97.4mph and got away with just 3 points and a 60 pound fine.

Very lucky indeed.

I got the same for doing 67mph in a temporary 50 zone. SP50 - Undefined speeding offence.

ETA. I fell for the whoosh moment too. Nightshift recovery mode is my excuse!

I got pulled on a motorway travelling between 91mph and well into local newspaper story speeds. Policeman let me off with 3 points and a £60 fine as fine as I was riving well, other than the obvious velocity issue.

What pisses me off though is speed limits are entirely arbitrary. Why is 70 considered safe on a UK motorway, 80 safe in France and 150 deemed ok on the Autobahn? I drive thousands of miles a year in Germany and I feel safer there. Speed limits should be variable IMO.

I went past an unmarked 3-Series going much quicker than I should have been a while back (it started with a 1..) I slowed down when the motorway went back down to two lanes - stil hovering near the lepton - and got pulled over as I turned off into the services. He was mostly worried about my the duff bulb in my high-level brake repeater although I did get reminded of speed limit before being let on my way.

I was probably going quick enough for a ban. It was on a four lane, well lit motorway in ideal conditions in the middle of the night and he was about the only other car there (and already travelling in excess of 70mph) so I don't think I was doing anything dangerous, but I'm extremely glad he appeared to agree. I might have walked the rest of the journey otherwise.

I got the same for an average of 117 over a mile.

As per the OP, roads were clear, wasn't driving dangerously, was polite, apologetic, courteous.
None of this bks about trying to get out of it, excuses, etc, I was caught doing something I shouldn't have been doing and was very, very grateful to be let off with a fixed penalty.

Scared the st out of me at the time - I've a lot to lose, I drove at dead on the speed limit for quite a while. Speed has crept up a bit since, but not a vast amount, that's what track days are for...

Edited to add - there really are good cops and bad cops out there, same as with any profession

I don't doubt it but it wouldn't be such a stretch to have a dual limit system for wet and dry like a lot of countries.

I had similar feelings when I got pulled over on the M4 a few years back. It turned out the 103.2 on the digital display on the dash wasn't the radio station he'd been listening to as I'd hoped!
