100% Ford Fiesta. Spend a grand on a 10 year old tiny engined one, run it for a couple of years and bank the rest for the day you can insure a better car. Fiestas are actually quite fun and strong for what they are and your insurance is going to be well over £1k even on a 1.0 group 2 car.
Your first car gets bashed, smashed, possibly crashed, abused and wrecked by all your "mates" who can't drive yet piling in and dropping their fag ends everywhere.

Probably not what you want to hear, but really crap bangers make great first cars, much more fun to crash about in for 6 months rather than worrying about scratching your new pride & joy.

corsas and saxos will be quite expensive to insure as young people tend to crash them
The cheapest car I can find to insure at 20 is a 1.6 ford focus mk1
even fiesta 1.1 mk3s and 1.25 mk6s are at least £150 more
Also check price difference between fully comp and TPFAT, as quite often fully comp is cheaper than TPFAT if you up the voluntary excess a bit
