Learn To Drift With PistonHeads

Join us at Silverstone to learn the art of going sideways

Hold it, hold it....I'm doing it!
Hold it, hold it....I'm doing it!
When we say 'learn to drift', we mean learn how to get your car sideways and hold in there with confidence, how to balance on the sweet spot and how to 'hang it out' in the first place driving a road-going car.

This isn't lurid Japanese cars competing for top honours while waving out of the window; this is perfecting the art of oversteer the PH way.

If you have ever wanted to handle oversteer without panic, come and join PistonHeads at Silverstone on the 22nd October where we'll have a group of instructors, some lovely Caterhams and the PH team on hand for a day's tuition on how get out of shape on purpose. We will get you going sideways by the end of the day if you are a complete novice or help to hone your skills if you have some experience of driving through the side windows.

Instructors are very tall.....
Instructors are very tall.....
An orientation and demonstration from our instructors will familiarize you with the cars and you will be taught to steer the car using the throttle.

Initially you may find yourself spinning the car as you deliberately provoke power oversteer, but don’t worry as this is par for the course! You will then learn how to kick the tail out and hold the slide by balancing smooth steering and throttle inputs. There are few feelings more satisfying than controlling a massive tyre-melting drift and the ‘grin factor’ is simply off the scale....especially when you're not paying for the tyres!

When your confidence has grown we will change to a more challenging track layout designed to allow you longer drifts. Ultimately there will be four courses with the last giving you the opportunity to show off your new drifting abilities at a higher speed and through multiple corners. Our team will judge the three best drifters of the day and award prizes, but everyone leaves with a smile and improved driving skills.

In addition to having a great laugh, you will be fed throughout the day too. All you need to bring is your driving licence and a book of excuses.

We'll launch these sessions at Silverstone on the 22nd October, where we can accomodate 24 PHers. If demand is there we will hold more sessions at other venues around the country.

The day costs £225 per person and additional spectators can be added at the time of booking @ £10 (including lunch).

To book, call up the Caterham team on 01883 333700 and quote “PistonHeads drift school”. All customers who book on for the day will receive an information pack giving specific times, directions and additional information.

Online booking available here

We look forward to seeing you there!

You're unlikely to fit in even their SV, I'm afraid.

I've been on one of these days, and loads of folk were driving about with only one shoe on because there wasn't space in the tunnel for both.

It is a marvellous laugh though.

Assuming this is being run in association with Caterham Cars own squad - in the Silverstone car park - anyone that goes will have an amazing time. I've been in the fortunate position to their drift day twice, and it was brilliant each time!

I did this (not through PH) with Caterham a few years ago.

It's perhaps not the best set-up as a 'drift school', but its a lot of fun nonetheless.

I don't know if the set-up is the same, but IIRC you were (in groups of 3 or 4) shown something, then given 3 'laps' around the cones to try it and then you were out the car giving someone else a go. Never really had the chance to really get the hang of what you were being shown as the time in the car was too short.

Also, don't be misled by the venue 'Silverstone'; it is actually car park number 3 at Silverstone which wasn't anywhere near level, and the subtle gradient changes made holding the car on the limit quite tricky. (i.e sometime positive camber, sometimes negative)

On the plus side, I met Chris Harris there (decent bloke and VERY handy behind the wheel) who made the whole thing look so easy, as did Caterham's own bimbo promo girl irked ( biggrin )

You're correct about the car park, best not to let any confusion set in so let's make that clear now.

As for the tuition, it has changed from the format you suggest and I also believe that instructor - pupil ratio has been improved too.

I did this last month (or month before) at Silverstone.

Yes it is in a car park but very worth doing. For £225 you get a very decent amount of time in the car. The blonde haired girl I think is called Sam - and yes she is fit and a very quick driver and the other person we had was Darren, top lad as well.

If you have not taken part in one of these days, I would thoroughly recommend it.

OK, so I have a steer on weight and height but as Caterham themselves say, all people are different.

Height wise, the recommended maximum is 6'6' and weight up to about 18 stone, but again that all depends on your build. Caterham has kindly suggested that if anyone wants to try a car for size they can pop into the Caterham showroom to have a sit in one.

It is worth mentioning that we'll have wide bodied and 'normal' Caterhams available on the day, and most people are able to squeeze into one without too much effort.

Seems awfully expensive, I almost did one of these with Driftworks last year which provided you with a car, tyres and on a track, not a carpark, it was £140 IIRC smile

Sure whoever goes will have fun though

Thanks for clarifying.
When I booked, I (perhaps naively) assumed it would be on one of the decent corners on Silverstone, and it would be something like Chris Harris' M5 drifting video, only with marginally less talent.

The day way still good fun, and it was good just to have a shot in something as 'pure' as a Caterham, and good to hear they've refined the format.

Book an experience day in the single seaters; they're more than happy to give you a few pointers on sideways stuff. Mainly because the tracks a lot quieter than usual.

yes Did one a while back and whilst good fun, you had to get out of car to let someone else take over just when you had the 'feel' for it. Great idea and lots of fun, but too much money for the amount of time spent in the car. Came away,,,,disappointed to be honest. This one though hopefully will be different??
