BP fuel price goes up 1 or 2p when you return the nozzle

Just an observation. Happend today at a BP and previously at a BP. I fill up to say 15.06 for example. Take the filler out and return it to the pump, by which time it has gone up about between 1 and 3 pence. Could be I've slightly pulled the lever again but I think not. Curious if anyone else has noticed it and I'm aware it's only a minute amount of money.

I'm glad it isn't only me who's noticed this!!

There are only a few garages I fill up at due to price, but there is a BP one that I have had to use a few times. Noticed the last 3 times I'll stop on 10.00 it will always go up when putting the pump back by a 3-4p. This varies between pumps too Could just be coincidence that it is BP, but never happens on the other garages I use.

I should've been born in the North.

They have a special button behind the till which does this.

An alarm sounds if someone fills up to an exact amount - eg. £50 - at which point they press the button to make it £50.01 just to piss you off.

The petrol station I use near home, which I'm sure is BP, actually charges you a penny less than what the fuel pump says. So 19.99 when the pump reads 20.00. The charity box on the counter probably does quite well out of it!

I've done this on various petrol stations - if you hold up the loop of the filler hose, you get a tiny tiny bit more petrol through. If you let the loop drop before you have replaced the nozzle, a bit more petrol goes through the flow meter and charges you - if you hold the loop up whilst you replace the nozzle, the valve at the top of the hose is closed so no more fuel comes through.

Of course, the next person is then charged for the few cc's of fuel required to fill the hose up to the nozzle ...

If you push the handle awy from you once done it seals the valve and stops it completely.

Can't believe it's not just me that gets that extra bit out of the hose!

I once saw someone faffing for 5 minutes to drain the hose, lifting it up etc.

I didn't really see the point, the extra delay when you get held up at the next lights that were green before you started faffing will use that plus some...

On a more serious noe pump number 3 at Texaco in Crowborough was giving you fuel at a silly price the other day about 80p/litre as it read 20 litres and I only had to pay £16. Havn't been back since

You see, when you know how to do it, it's not a faff:

1. Start filling.
2. lift up loop whilst filling.
3. stop filling but do not let loop drop
4. return nozzle to holster
5. THEN drop the loop.

I reckon there is between a third and a half litre in the hose, and half of that is in your tank instead of hanging about in the hose.
