tarmac drive ?

dont want to have block drive at mo so was looking at tarmac have been told the turning of wheels will event dig in to it!!! what else is avail eg motorway material etc any views cheers all

I think this is only an issue when it is new or a pikey has done it for you with 0.01mm of hardcore.

Properly laid base and top over compacted type 1 should cause no such issues.

Depends on the material used and how it is laid.

If it's done properly, then it'll be fine.

It's not the sub-base that matters, the quality of the sub-soil dictates what sub-base is used and at what thickness.

Dry-steering and other surface wear, just ensure you spec a good material.

Incidentally, 'tarmac' hasn't been used for years and years.

I will resist turning into a colossal highways engineer geek explaining why 'tar' and coal tar products aren't used anymore, but suffice to say Europe decided it was nasty and hazardous and told us to play nice and stop using it.

OP, if you want any materials or systems specified that will mean your driveway lasts longer than the road outside your house, shoot me an e-mail.

A decent depth (50mm min) of 20mm washed gravel is good, providing it's properly bound on all sides and not just scattered on top.

Whatever you do, don't use Type 1 or some other graded aggregate as a surface material. This stuff is a substrate material, and will look rubbish very quickly, and you'll get fine bits of limestone particles all in your house and embedded in the carpets etc of your cars which is a fking nightmare.
