Insurance Renewal - From £500 to £670, WFT?!?
Discussion
9 years NCD (actually never claimed in my life), mid thirties, so how come A-Plan have sent a renewal for my premium where it's gone from £500 to £670?
They have suggested an alternate insurer who will provide the same cover for "only" £560 but is this something peculiar to A-Plan or reasonably high performing cars (it's only a 2006 Boxster though) or is everyone seeing the same?
Before anyone says it I've literally just opened the letter, yes I know it's their choice what risk levels they choose to insure etc. but a 25% increase does seem to be taking the piss.

Time to shop around!
I had the house insurance renewal through, never had any claims yet it went up £34
So I looked around and found it on Money Supermarket, identical cover for £48 less than the renewal quote, with the same Sodding company!
when questioned they said o that is for new customers,
So now I am a new customer again

Yeah, all my insurances have had renewals which jumped up a bit this year. On the other hand, a bit of phoning around has managed to keep the prices down to what I paid last year (mostly with better cover).
They all seem to blame last years winter but neglect the fact that I didn't have an accident last winter.

Try 'Need 2 Insure'. They got my quote down from £630 to £359! And with less excess!
Oh, forgot to say and we now have an agreed value as well. Couldn't leave it to market value, got a bit scared of that one when (just for a laugh) I asked 'webuyanycar.com' how much they would offer for my 1989 E30 M3 with less than 60,000 miles on it........they offered £70 (yes, seventy pounds). I know that's not a realistic valuation but it was enough to scare me.

Car insurers have been burnt over a long-term tendency to increase market share with low rates (which has lost them money) and this year in particular, the number of accidents during the winter when people who weren't normally used to snow had to drive in it. A few of them are giving up on chasing market share and now trying to turn a profit on what they have instead.
Plus accident payouts are on a rising trend anyway... it's not paying a bloke to bash out a panel with a hammer any more, a big crash could be 2-3 airbags, body colour bumpers needing respraying, whiplash claims, hire cars while the two insurance companies argue and so on.
You can claw some of it back by careful shopping around but the overall trend is going to be up until we come up with some way to stop people crashing all over the place.

Perhaps I'm being naive but what's the point of NCD other than to show that I'm safe?
Of course I could go out and crash tomorrow but it seems an odd model where you penalise the customers who sign a cheque and you don't hear from them for a year in order to compensate for the ones who've actually claimed.

I quite agree with you - surely it should be all those people who couldn't keep their cars out of the ditches, walls and other vehicles who should be paying for the costs of repairing their cars! I've had a similar experience, mine went up from £360 to £780. I wouldn't mind if I was driving a nice car like the OP, but I drive a two grand Skoda Diesel Estate. :-(

You should see the premiums for people less or zero ncd, or with claims. The ncd system still gives you the discount, but it is off the base rate.Of course I could go out and crash tomorrow but it seems an odd model where you penalise the customers who sign a cheque and you don't hear from them for a year in order to compensate for the ones who've actually claimed.
