Part Worn Tyres

[Cost Captain]

I was speaking to somebody today who puts part worn tyres on his 58 plate Discovery. and not even the properly assessed ones that are stamped, he said a mate gets them for him....

Is it just me or if you had a virtually brand new disco wouldn't you shell out for brand new tyres? regardless of cost, surely if you want a new car like that you have to fork out?

Any opinions towards part worn tyres welcome!

Does depend really. If he's replacing one that got punctured, it's quite sensible to keep the rolling diameter of the wheel similar.

Some people only want brand new cars for the snob value of the number plate. You can see his whole attitude to ownership there, people don't see the crap tyres he puts on, just the 'expensive' new car they he is driving.

thats whats I've always thought! someone once said they are removed from cars that are written off, but surely that would have flat spots from the emergency manouver the driver tried to make before crashing!

I thought some part woens were imported from Germany? Where their laws are stricter than in the UK?

I've used part worns, last one I bought was to match the other part worn tyres on the car. The place I go to buys them complete with wheel then scraps the wheels.
But if I could afford a néw or nearly new car then the cost of new tyres would be insignificant.

Part worns on a 58 plate Disco? Really? Your mate is a cheapskate at best, and someone willing to put his families lives at risk for the sake of a few quid at worst.

I'd only put part worn tyres on a hire car I was due to return.

Part worns are not cheaper - in the long run i have found they are about the same cost, less tread=shorter life, and strangely seem to get punctured more.
Maybe disco owner is completely broke with making huge repayments on said car...

I stuck some on the back of my Saab that I never really use, as for endangering my family, what a load of old crap, you buy a second hand car it comes with four part worns, I inspected the two I bought and they were/are fine, I would take secondhand Michelin's over new budget tyres every time.

Do you lot get new tyres fitted on every rental you drive, do you check the tyres on every Bus or Taxi you ride in ?

How do you come to terms with a repaired tyre or god forbid, entire car ?

For me it was the differnce between sixty quid and three hundred.

Though, if I could afford a new Discovery I doubt I would bother

It depends on the car they have come from, some people like to change theirs every xxx miles regardless of wear, the discounts you get on a set of four normally makes changing a set cheaper then them singly every time one needs doing so 2 or 3 may be less worn than the rest, the reasons could be endless. Minicabs normally buy part worns as they are cheap and as they are usually only running round town, paying £80-£90 for a branded one is a bit false enonomy, and the fact they're tighter then a government funded bank.

I have used part worn tyres a lot in the past and never paid more than £30 for them.

I've never had any issues or any increased frequency of punctures.

I have however always been selective about the tyres; only a premium brand, only if I can inspect the inside of the tyre to see whether it has been repaired, only if it does not have any signs of damage or irregularity and only if it has over 5mm of tread at the lowest point across the tyre and no uneven wear.

There's a place near me who I have heard buy them in bulk from Germany for £1 to £2 a tyre - not sure I'd be interested in those tbh!

He's a plonker for not buying decent ones. No shame in buying part worns, they're usually next to brand new. Can't say I ever have but I wouldn't rule it out.

Birmingham trading standards did a bit of research on part worn tyres. It wasn't exhaustive but the findings interesting. To paraphrase "6 out of the 6 part worn tyres x-rayed had internal damage that could not be detected by normal inspections or seen by the naked eye."
