As I was driving today, I found that the new Focus I've got is expected to do 650 miles on the current tank - which is quite a lot, and around 3x more than the Tiv!

I also wondered what standard production cars had the biggest range - because big 4x4s have big 100 litre tanks - but drink the fuel. Maybe a diesel S class Merc or other Autobahn cruiser?

Second tank rally endurance specials don't count.

I sold my Vento TDI today, but it had done 660 miles since the last refill and I reckon I could've got another 40 mile commute in there before needing to fill up.

Audi A8 3.0 TDI with 90 lite tank? Top gear managed 800 miles from 4.0 V8 TDI (same size tank) so would imagine the smaller V6 should be pushing for 1000. This is really tickling it along, mind.

Ive done 800 miles on a tank with 50 in reserve but recently discovered that is probably inaccurate and there was probably more like 80-100 miles left in the tank.

Thats in an a4 1.9tdi 130 01 reg with a roughly 65L tank. That was a slightly rare occurrence i used to consistently get 750 with 50 in reserve and that was regardless of how i drove.

I'll see about 720 miles to a tankfull on my normal driving.

If I'm going just back and forward to Aberdeen, which I've not done for months, then I can see another 100 on top of that.

Car holds a spit over 11 gal.

Renault Grand Scenic 1.9dci

Currently does about 550 miles to a tank round town (avg approx 42mpg and filling up as soon as the warning comes on) - not sure how far it wil go purely on a run as I haven't had it long enough to find out but does about 49mpg on the motorway and 53mpg on A/B roads so theoretically could do 700ish miles to a tank - not bad for a baby bus!

MPG drops to 32mpg when I attach the caravan though getmecoat

I'd wager the Volvo S80 1.6 diesel must be up there with it's 70litre tank and circa 63mpg combined? I reckon in my head that gives it a circa 1000 mile range, and that's without counting the extra-urban figure which you might get closer to on a long haul?

What kind of driving were you doing to get 850 miles from the tank?

Doing a mixed bag of traffic, town driving and cruising my S70 TDi is getting around 700-725 when the light comes on, indicated about 50-51mpg.

There was the Jaguar XJ Diesel that did 1000miles on one tank (John O'Groats to Land's End) although I imagine that was with some very careful driving!

Just motorway cruising. Gatwick-Manchester-Bolton-Manchester-Gatwick (all done at early morning or late at night, so not much traffic around).

Might sound silly, but the engine in my car was a peach compared to (quite a few) others i've been in.

Roughly 750 miles from Kent to South West France in an E320CDi this summer.

We weren't sparing the horses, either ;-)

This is the reason I failed my exams, not reading things properly!

Was just about to ask why you had done 50 miles in reverse!

I reckon a Landcruiser (80 series) with the optional long range tanks would be a good bet. It has a 85 litre tank as standard & an option 130L tank was available giving 215L of fuel. Mine will manage 600 miles on its 85L with a gentle cruise just. So 1200 miles should be easy. The £250 fuel bill at the other end might kill you though!

The best car we've ever had for range was 90's Passat Tdi it would do 800-900 miles easily on nearly every fill.
