Talk to me about road rallying, navigational rallies etc.

A few weeks back I had a go at a very gentle navigational rally and I rather enjoyed it. It was taken at a very sedate pace (leading for much of it was a 1920s Lagonda!) and I wondered what the options were for doing something similar, but a bit more competitive at club/individual level?

When I say road rallying, I'm not completely sold on the idea of opposite locking it around open roads at 3am as some of the more intense club road rallies seem to involve I, and I don't really want to splash out on a fully prepped car and trailer it to proper closed stage rallies. What do you have in between that's pretty informal and suitable for any road car, but still has a competitive element?

It's worth speaking to your local motor club and seeing what 12 car rallys they have one.

I'm based in Newcastle and Hexham Motor Club run a 12 car every month. Takes about 90 mins and is just a bit of a laugh.

Not as full on as a proper road rally and can be done in any car you want.

Most local motor clubs run them.

Do you ever get any with things like closed sections or autotests thrown in?

There's an Auto solo in Oxford next month. Doesn't involve the nav side so much and it's all on a closed coarse. But fun in similar sideways manner.

Most nav rallies are quite gentle, although 12 car rallies can be more extreme. Might be worth looking at the CMC club website at Gymkhana events, they are pretty much as close as you can get to a stage rally without it being a stage rally. Anything more extreme requires a race license and can easily and potentially jump up a price category. There's a good number of historic rallies, but only certain cars and mods qualify.

I won't be at the next gymkhana as my TR7 is too loud and has too many cylinders..... !!!
