1999 A6 2.8 Quattro - anything to watch out for?

Been a few threads on older A4s and 6s in the Audi section of late, well worth a read.
They like to leak and burn oil whilst consuming petrol in roughly equal quantities.
Suspension will be a bit tired and wobbly.
DIS LCD unlikely to work much.
Aircon unlikely to work much.
Volume knob will have a mind of its own.
Engine whilst old tech doesn't tend to go very wrong, gearbox and quattro system should be problem free. Interior tends to stand up to age and miles pretty well.

I have a passat 4motion 2.8 estate so basically the same car, as said it'll leak oil from the cam cover and they all do this. Mines on 110,000miles and doesn't burn any oil and fuel consumption on motorway will be 30mpg but general pottering about will be 24mpg. Mine needed two new flex sections that are attached to the cat vag wanted £1400 but a performance place welded me new sections in for £200.
Doesn't feel like it has 200bhp due to it's shear mass. Generally it feels like a tank. Perfect dog cart type motor.

I picked it up on Christmas eve 2009 - was fantastic through all the snow.
94k miles on odo. (certified).
However...
It had more rattles than I care to mention.
The gearbox / transfer box (not sure which) was very noisy.
The side trims at the base of the doors were falling off (a common failing on this model).
It consumed oil like crazy, emitting huge clouds on each cold start (was fine when warm), apparently another common 'thing'.
Fuel consumption was very.. 'meh'.
And the standard wheels were badly corroded (also very common).
But apart from the above a lovely car.
But you might do better getting a 1.8 Turbo Quattro IMHO.
ETA: Mine was a one lady owner car (genuine) with a LOT of history. I guess she had reached the point where she simply didn't want to spend any more money on it.

Valve stem seals seem to go leaking oil in whilst standing. These engines also seem to be very sensitive to oil type - if you use the later spec VW oil it is too think and it burns it at a stupendous rate. The same problem afflicts the V8's.Edited by TonyRPH on Monday 20th September 16:01
