Hi Guys

I am after a comfortable 4 seater (ideally 4 door, but 2 doors is workable) car that I plan to keep for at least 5 years.

Needs to be a little interesting, and depreciation resistant!! I am not suggesting any of the listed above meet that requirement. 5k annual mileage.

Wide budget range £20k to £45k, but space for only one car.

If the Panamera was within my budget, I would have added it to the list.

I have a small runabout for short journeys.

Grateful for your comments,experiences, alternatives.

I think I would take an RS4 or the latest / best e39 M5 I could find.

or the E60, just for the fact that its a big ol' V10. But the M5's, RS6 and S8 will feel a fair bit bigger than the M3 or RS4, depends who or what you need to ship around.

Whilst I loved the performance of the E60 M5, the gearbox put me off. Worst of both worlds.

The E46 CSL is awesome. Was on track with one at Snetterton recently and it was just lovely.

How about a Maserati? The 3200, 4200 and 4200 GranSport have space for four adults and their luggage for 10 days driving in France, according to my experience and there is certainly a lot of theatre to driving one. "Let's take the Maserati", just sounds better than "Let's take the BMW, Audi..."

There's just the risk of running costs, but a 4200 is supposed to be better (I actually prefer the 3200 though). Not sure if the current GranTurismo has room for four, and it will probably continue to depreciate a fair bit.

I think all of those cars are fantastic but I still think I'd end up buying the cheapeast of the bunch, the E39 M5.

None of them will be cheap to run but who can argue with a reliable 400bhp saloon for £15k? It's a car I plan to own in the future.
