ford focus TDCI 100ps, 2003 registration

75000 miles covered with FSH

flywheel needs replacing sometime soon

im contemplating remapping this car as its nippy at the minute but an extra 30 bhp on tap would be nice

is there anything to think about before remapping it? i.e. condition of the car? will the remap cause any damage if i was to use the power often? as it stands i always put my foot down in 2nd gear at 2000 revs until 3000 revs as i like the torque feel, and i would probably do that again with a remap

Yes. If you want. But not if you don't. It's not a tricky subject to research.

With 130hp you ought to consider strengthening the chassis, but other than that it will be just fine.

Have a look at this link, a slight alternative to a usual remap.

http://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/

Maybe of some use or maybe not.

I was put off remaps after having a head gasket failure less than 1k after mapping. The map was from a reputable source but I think the car was just too high mileage/old to take it (even though it was well cared for, FSH etc).

I think on new cars a remap is probably fine, but the older the car the more risk there is that having the extra power will just push the engine components into an early failure.

Having said that I don't know if Petrol is different from Diesel when it comes to the risks of tuning.

On the plus side, diesel remaps give you both more performance and better fuel economy, whilst not over stressing the engine, they certainly aren't going to cause any premature failures.

On the down side, diesel remaps give you worse fuel economy, and over stress the engine, so there is a good chance something is going to go wrong with your engine.

But the good thing is you'll get better fuel economy, more performance, and definitely not break the engine. It's a total win-win situation.

Unfortunately your engine is extremely likely to go wrong, and you'll use much more fuel.

I trust this clears the matter up for you.

I'd just live with what I've got or use the excuse to buy a different car.

Or maybe remap the car he has, or perhaps not.

Slightly different but I had a 115ps Focus and put a tuning box on it. I had it on about a year but took it off some time before selling it. It was brilliant for the time it was on and very cheap too. I never got it RRoaded but it went like st off a shovel and impressed many in much faster cars. I was always concerned with the amount of smoke that came from the exhaust so in the end I took it off as precautionary. Cheap option, but maybe not the best.

You certainly don't need to strengthen the chassis, although I don't know if you have disc brakes on the back, I assume you do.

(For what it's worth I used to make the chassis for these and there was only one difference between the std focus and the uprated version which was only fitted to the RS focus. The material was 1mm thicker and the nuts/bolts 2mm bigger in dia (from memory))

+1

Davy - are you really telling us that people were impressed by a smoky Focus putting out, maybe, tops, 140ps with a tuning box?

What were their "much faster cars"?
