importing/ bringing your car back from US

My unce had got an old Mustang over in the States, He's lived there for a while but is coming back shortly.

Does anyone know how the import of it works? Will he have to pay VAT on the car as it was bought in the US, or becaus he's owned it for a while will that be ok?

I know VAT would normally be payable, but wanted to know if there is a length of time you can own a car for, then import it without paying the VAT cost kind of thing?

As he has owned it in the states there wont be any duty to pay or vat if he brings it here, although this will become payable if he sells within 12 months of it having landed here.
