hi guys.
in an idiotic show of defiance to sod's law, I decided to change my rear wheel bearing this evening. bought a torque wrench, forgot the hub puller as I thought I already had one...
bearing won't budge out of the hub (drum brake), even with a liberal dose of heat from the blow lamp and a properly sized drift I made at work earlier. all I've managed to do is knock the tapers out leaving the sleeve in place. car is currently on axle stands and the hub is in the oven...
yes, I should have paid for it to be done, yes I probably deserve a ribbing, but yes I would appreciate some advice as to proceed. I've already tried using spring compressors as makeshift press to force it out but no joy. I have to be 50miles away by 9am and the nearest motor factor won't be open until then.

You need a vice and a couple of big sockets.
Thats all I'm saying on the matter as if you can't work it out from that with all due respect you shouldn't be doing the job! I don't mean that nastily!
The bearings in drums and rear hubs are usually very easy to press out, and usually with a decent drift they will wallop out but you can damage the drum. I suspect as you drift it out your just cockling the bearing over so it's wedging. Dust push it cleanly out with the vice you won't stress the drum and break it either (they are semi fragile).
Your wasting your time with the oven.

Oven wont do anything as said, it will only free up different metals when the coefficient of expansion is different enough!
Are you just left with the outside "shell" of the bearing in it's hole? If so you can carefully cut it out with a hacksaw blade, but you must be incredibly careful!

If I follow correctly, the outer race is still left in the hub?
One technique recommended to me by a lorry mechanic (if you have an arc welder) to removing the outer race from the hub is to run a ring of weld metal around the inside with the welder. When it cools the bearing will shrink and should be able to be removed fairly easily. Never tried it myself though.

no vice or welder unfortunately,the welding one works by shrinking the outer race as the weld cools.
I do have a hacksaw, I'll go careful but as long as I make my 9am appointment I can always buy a new hub.
