130 M-Sport Purchase

Hi,

Seriously thinking of swapping my A3 3.2 for a 5dr 130 M-Sport.


Just wondering if there are any special things I should be looking out for over and above normal used car items.


Also spec. wise what items are a must?

What items are a must? Amputated legs if you want to sit in the back!

Power steering pumps are common to go on the 1 Series, check if it has been done. Mine went at 60k odd miles, cost around £400 to put right.

They're not the most spacious in the back and when compared against the immediate competition they're a bit tight, but its not significantly worse than my old Seat Leon (AKA Mk4 Golf), I'm 5'10 and can happily sit in the back of mine with the seat positioned for me driving. If you're over 6ft and need the seat quite a way back then it might be an issue but then the same issue would occur in a lot of compact hatches.

Power steering pumps only applies to pre facelift cars (the ones with the larger reversing light), as FL cars from mid 2007 have electric rather than hydraulic power steering.

Brakes (Single permanently shot calipers)/Suspension (inept damping)/ Tyres (run 5h!ts). Cross country your 8P 3.2 is likely to be superior.

How do you mean shot brakes??

The damping on the Audi isn't great.......... But yes traction is great.

A spirited drive and the brakes will wilt. The factory A3 suspension is also under-damped and oversprung.

You'd be suprised as to just how quickly a 130i can be pedalled across country.

Have you ever driven a 130i. I've taken mine on track many times and the brakes are superb, better then any other car I've had. It wouldn't piss over an A3 in pure speed terms but it would be far more entertaining. The engines a peach and you actually get some form of feedback from the steering. The only complaint is on undulating road surfaces where the cars rear end can get a little bouncy but this is said to be cured by ditching the runflats.

Yes, I have driven one (although early 2006- some years back- pre-facelift, the facelift approx week 10 production 2007 onwards had revised suspension etc...so I would guess that it is far superior now). The E87 has much purer driving dynamics....outright handling/steering/throttle response etc...so it is more entertaining. However in damp conditions the A3 will be more effective...undoubetedly the 130 is the better drive.

In what sense would an A3 3.2 be more effective on damp roads?

Very odd comment !
Bloated front wheel drive v rwd with a great engine.
I'm pretty certain >90% would prefer the 130, even on runflats.

I'd personally hold out for Navigation. Ours had it. M Sport, and personally Le-Mans Blue or Black for me.

Cracking little cars. We had one for around a year. As said, rear space isnt mahoosive, but still perfectly usable, and plenty of space if you drop the rear seats.

What is your budget?
