BHP per tonne really seems to be the new MPH among enthusiasts.

My mind has gone blank as to what would be the quickest, cheapest way to shatter the 300BHP per Tonne barrier?

I know people will scream kit cars, but kits with the necessary power to fall in this category (particularly with a fatty of a driver like myself in the cockpit) seem to be very few and far between, certainly for a "reasonable" amount of money.

I've been thinking that a early Impreza RA (1170KG?) with a few tweaks to bring it upto 350BHP would be the daddy, especially given the 4WD advantage?

Thoughts?

And no, "XXXXXX + NOS". We've heard it all before wink.

Elise + AUDI 20v Turbo?

Or, an old Sierra Cosworth. Pretty easy to milk 330bhp out of them, making sure it doesn't melt or go bang in the process is the key.

I put this together years ago (I don't particularly maintain it anymore as CBA set in). Click on the original tab at the bottom. The bolded column is bhp/ton including an 80kg driver (weights are wet where I could get them also).

1.8 MX5 = £1500 + Begi turbo kit £2500 and strip out the MX5 and you should be there. Alternatively mk2 MR2T rev3 £3000 + £2000 for a garret turbo kit and strip it out.

Typical Audi-converted cars are £15k or so for the 260bhp (ie remapped, but otherwise basically standard) 1.8T's and £20K or thereabouts for the 330-or so bhp IHI rollerbearing re-turboed engines.

The all up weight for an early S1 elise with either of these is in the region of 760Kg. You'd overshoot 300bhp/ton by rather a lot with the 330bhp car.

I'd still rather have an elise-honda though!

My westfield was around 220bhp and around 600kgs (with me in it), so well into the 300bhp/tonne bracket.

Easily had for under £10k.

Why would 4WD be an advantage? It zaps power between crank and wheels and makes your target even harder to attain.

To answer the original question, how about somethign from this page: http://www.superkart.org.uk/For_Sale.htm
Example:

For Sale - Anderson 250 National

2001 Anderson Chassis + 2001 Honda CR250 in Long Circuit trim.
  • 1 full set of Long Circuit bodywork
  • 1x 6inch Dunlop Slicks,
  • 1x 6inch Dunlop Wets,
  • 2x 5inch Slicks,
  • 2x 5inch Wets,
  • short circuit bars,
  • spare barrel,
  • spare exhaust,
  • spare ignition plus any others I can find.
Ready to race for 2010 season Long or Short Circuit.
Ran in at Stars of Darley 09 ready for sale, 2 wins from 2 races.

Price: £3750

PwR of a superkart obviously depends on power. 250 engines vary from 60-odd to 95-odd bhp (singles or twins, really), and the karts themselves weigh about 125-135Kg. Do the maths yourself...

C20LET nova/corsa?

MK2 20vt using a 225 20v as starting point, hybrid K04 and mapped to suit.

Cheap starship mileage Ibiza cupra (1170kgs), hybrid K03, fueling, mapping, exhaust and intake, on a diet will hit 300/tonne.

Basically a tunable turbo lump in a light shell.

But on the flipside it makes it much easier to deploy a greater proportion of that PWR in less than ideal conditions.

Of course, how often you can actually use 300hp/ton safely(not to mention legally) in the real world is another question... my MX5 isn't far off that and its very easy to end up going much faster than you should be.

To get to 300bhp/tonne from an ST it would have to be putting out 400bhp.

With an 80Kg driver, it would need 419bhp to hit the magic 300bhp/ton.

It's not possible to get an ST to put out 420bhp for cheap.
