DVLA Say There's No Record of a Test Certificate

Renewing RFL for my van.

Insurance policy has been renewed well in advance (current one lapses end of month) and the MOT is due end of month too.

In the past, I've tried to renew RFL online but the system has not allowed me to so while the MID wasn't showing my new insurance.

This time, the direct.gov.uk/taxdisc facility is telling me that there is no record of a test certificate (I tried this four days ago when there was still 12 days still to run on it!).

Bit annoying seeing that I do have a valid test certificate and the van is booked in for its test on 24th - six days before current one expires). I'll be leaving the van with the test centre as I'm away for a few days. My aim was to get this all sorted so that short of the van failing its MOT, I can drive it (legally) on my return.

But now I won't be able to apply for my RFL until I get back, by then the current one would have lapsed.

Is there a rule which governs a minimum length of MOT required to apply for RFL?

Is it not a case that the system is seeing that you dont have a valid MOT for the period that the new tax disc would be covering?

Yes you have an MOT now, but it runs out at the end of the month when you want your new tax disc to start in Oct.

Yes you have an MOT now, but it runs out at the end of the month when you want your new tax disc to start in Oct.

I renew mine with just a few days left on old MOT. Its probably that your Van/MOT are not on the database.

Read it again. The suggestion is that the Tax would start 1st Oct while the MOT would end 30th Sept (e.g. before the tax "starts"). So the Tax he's applying for would have no overlap with the current MOT. I don't know if that's why it refused. But it sounds reasonable.

I've certainly had issues renewing my tax when the insurance policy ran out the day before the tax was due to start. It didn't matter if it was only valid for 1 day afterwards, but it had to be valid on the day the tax started.

I don't know if they're similarly anal about the MOT.

I've had a similar thing - annoying when insurance/tax/MOT all fall at the same time as you're quite right - MOT ends 30th September, but you're applying for tax from 1st October - a date that, at the moment, you have no MOT for.

You can do an online MOT check: Clicky - MOT History Check will give you the current one as well as past ones. You do need the document reference number off the V5 (or an MOT test number) as well as the vehicle registration to run it though.

If it doesn't appear on there, your MOT test station didn't upload it as they should, which would explain the problem.

But your MOT expires on 30/9 - i.e., on the 1/10 you don't have an MOT. And that's the date you're trying to buy tax from.

So does this mean that if I applied for six months and when that period was over (with six months also left on the MOT) I couldn't get 12 months RFL at that point?

Not that I want to buck the system.

Ahhh - thanks very much for that. I'm having the problem (insurance expires the 26th septemeber) when I'm trying to buy a tax disk for 1st of Oct. Even though i'm rolling over with the same insurance company.

It wouldnt surpise me if it was a similar case with your MOT expiring.

You can do that because there is overlap between the MOT and Tax. Infact I'd advise it. Saves this problem happening next year of MOT and Tax are 6 months apart.

No, it means that you COULD get 12 months RFL as there is an overlap.

No, you just need it to show that it has an MOT at the point when the tax starts.

No. Last time I taxed online, it was on the expiry date of the MOT and I had no problems.
