Insurance for US Car rental - help needed

Afternoon all, i have a quick question which i'm sure somebody can resolve easily.

I've never hired a car before (anywhere) but will need a car for a couple of days whilst in San Antonio in November. Do i need my own insurance as well as the CDW's etc?How does the whole insurance/rental thing work out there?

Any help would be appreciated

if you hire through hertz.co.uk,avis.co.uk,usrentacar.com or holidayautos.co.uk they will give you a "fully inclusive" rate with all the insurance you need - if you rent from the US sites the rates will be cheaper but dont include insurance...
