poped in to a dealer today to find out how much I would get trading in my Boxster. Have never traded in a car before so all new to me. He asked how much I wanted so i asked how much was he offering he countered with how much you wanting. So basically after 5 mins we didnt get anywhere and I left feeling a bit stupid.

Should I have given in and said a price or would you normally expect the dealer to make an offer ?

I would expect the dealer to make an offer first! I've always found the dealer tries to belittle you and explain how they know far more about the automotive industry than you so take their price.

You state your misguided figure of what you think it's worth, he proceeds to chuckle for a few moments before thumbing through his GG and then breaking your heart with a figure about 20-30% less than what you wanted.

It's obviously not something he wanted if he wouldn't even make you a chancer offer.

I expect a dealer to either give a price or tell me that they don't want the car and rather than insult me they'd prefer me to get rid of her privately...

It's simply a way of sounding out your expectations. I'd suggest countering with something along the lines of "I've seen a couple in the autotrader for XXX, but my car has lower mileage \ better spec etc, so I'd expect you to offer me more"

Then expect the usual "oh, I'll have to discuss it with my boss, but dont worry I'll try and work out a good deal for you"

Sounds like he has plenty of stock if he didn't even make you an offer.

Also trade in against what? there may be £1000 extra in one car over the other meaning he can offer £1000 more trade in.

ah never thought of that, never used a dealer in past. I was doing some emailing to a dealer last week who again asked what I was looking for and when I gave my figure he said it sounded reasonable but would obviously have to see car first so thinking I must of went in too low, hence my reluctance to name a price tonight

Try not to hung up on PX value, it is the cost to change that is important.

I always try to find out what the customer is expecting so I know whether to flatter the PX or discount the car.

If you name your price, and the dealer will go to it then does it matter if you went to low as you're happy with the price as it's what you asked for?
Don't forget he might have got to that price by over allowing on your car by using some of the profit in the car for sale to get to your figure.

Who ever said dealers insult them is pretty wrong, I had a customer on Wednesday suggest his car was in CAP clean condition and therefore worth that much even though it needed a 1/4 of the rear bumper spraying, all 4 wheels refurbing, 2 new tyres and a cambelt change, so about £800-£1000 of work.

Last part ex I did ,dealer asked how much do you want for it ?
I gave a price ,of £8000 he agreed ,i was happy ,he was happy

Then he tried to charge me £50 extra to transfer plate on top of dvla fee and £25 for new number plates

told him I would take my plates off my part ex which advertised the garage I bought that from and put them on the new car , the £50 he wanted to transfer the plate was for all the paperwork they had to do he reckoned

Told him forget the £50 ,I've never paid a dealer to transfer my plate

He gave in did it free as it should be

Local dvla office is less than a mile from the stealers I bought the car from

If you mean me, I was referring to a dealer who actually said to me that he would rather not insult me so didn't want to give me a trade in price....

It really varies - I was offered £10k for my Leon which I would have taken £8k for....

On the other hand, I was offered a LOT less than I expected for the subsequent Passat....

Sounds about right tbh. I have the same model and year.

Out of curiosity I had an online quote off a 'We want your car' type site and they offered me £8k.

ETA: Try the old fashioned approach and buy the latest Glass's Guide, and then compare to all the others for sale for condition, spec. and price. It's surprisingly easy to arrive at a figure after that. smile

my experience was the opposite. recently traded in an 05 kia sportage, looked up guide price on internet £5500 trade in value, £5900 part ex, £7000 dealer forecourt, so i was expecting an offer of 6 or just under, but i never mentioned a figure to saleman when he asked. he took us inside, looked in his book and offered us £7200.

i looked shocked and said, you're trying to take my pants down here, he wouldnt budge on the part ex price but gave a sizeable discount on the car we were buying as well. so good result me thinks

Looking to deal our 1 series back in for a 3 series touring at the moment, seen one exchanged e mails and the dealer called yesterday offering me between 11.5-12k

I was like hmmm, It's 5months and 3000miles out of an AUC scheme, is unmarked and that's approx 4.5k LESS than what I paid for it 5 months ago, so I said nope no way, it's a bit of an insult TBH as our car was a grand cheaper than the rest of the examples on offer at the dealer when we bought it as it was a SOR car with better spec and less miles.

I was offered 13,900 for it 2 months ago and I'm currently unsure what to do

1-series BMWs are taking a stoning right now.

Lots of cars in the market and not enough customers to buy them.

Plus finance companies are getting jittery again, getting funding is proving difficult for a lot of people.

So that car could sit on a fourcourt for 90+ days dropping in value all the time.
