996 Turbo- Is there anything that comes close for the money?

I am looking at selling up all my Cosworths, and moving to one car I can use every day.. Now call me unimaginative, but is there ANYTHING else that gets close to a 996 turbo for the money? (28-35k)..

420Bhp standard, with potential for a lot more with just a remap, and still can be used every day. I really am struggling to find anything else that ticks all the boxes!

Also, could you live with a yellow car? Browsing the classifieds, this beauty popped up, I love the colour but, can't help thinking Black/Silver would be a bit more suitable, (read boring!)but the speed yellow really suits the 911?

You could consider:

SL55 AMG, but it's more of a brutal straight line car, not one for the twisties. Makes a much nicer noise.

M6, can be driven everyday, and maybe even faster (I only slowly pull away from my cousins M5) in a straight line. Will handle better than the SL55.

Can't think of anything else at the moment!

Defo a TVR if a true petrolhead. I just dont like the 996, never have never will. If i was spending that sort of money an F355 would have to be an option if not just for sound and looks only!

Is Strange really, I have owned highly modified Cosworths for 11 years now. Whilst great fun, and absurdly fast, they just lack the every day use, and dare I say it, a bit of class. Which means, highly modded cars are out, as is Left hand drive. I think I just want somthing fast, reliable and classy, with the potential for a bit of light tuning when I inevitably get bored!

In your eyes maybe but two good friends of mine both use theirs Monday-Friday from Hants to central london! One has a Griff the other a 355 spyder. Both service when due and have no troubles. I dont use mine everyday as i only work 5 miles away so wouldnt want to put that strain on it.

As an alternative an SL600, then maybe tweak it a bit for even more grunt and an improved noise? Never driven either but would assume its allround abilities recommend it perhaps? Cant beat the SL55 for its own burbly qualities though.

I'd say that yellow one is about £4K over-priced. As for the original question - no, I don't believe there is anything which comes remotely close....

Yep those AMG's do make a lovely noise. How about a w209 clk63? Pretty rare but huge amount of scope for upping the power.

Whilst I agree with you, I think the OP has a bigger budget, which makes it a little unsuitable (superb cars however). But then again...for 30k, I'd go for a TVR and a daily car.

RS4 has similar power figure and (as far as I know) has some decent tuning options for upping that figure. Not quite as quick in a straight line but arguably a bit more practical day-to-day?

In answer to the original question I'm not sure any of the above beat a 996 turbo overall and the yellow one does look cool.

id rather 2 cars for that sort of money, and if it were me i wouldnt be picking a porsche anyway for £32k.

i saw a repair bill for a 996 turbo when a friend was looking for one, it had the engine rebuilt and a couple of other bits £14k!!!???
