car for through winter months?

in lieu of the 997, which won't be going away but will be getting considerably less use and given that getting OH out of the Range is simply not going to be possible....
for about £10k, what do you reckon
subaru forrester has been suggested as has Focus ST (not sure how two people came up with such different cars but a few lagers had been drunk)
anyway, 4wd has slight preference, apart from that, not too bothered,

1st gen audi s4 could be a giggle in winter with 4wd and turbo'd v6.
From experience I can tell you that you have to rather gentle with your right foot with a focus ST on greasy/icy/snowy roads, lots of torque means it struggles with traction freqently in winter, if your and enthusiastic driver, which you will be with that quattro-esque engine note.
Mk4 Golf R32 may be worth a look as well?

Looking to do the same sort of thing. Like the idea of a defender, but think I prefer the idea of a wafty Range Rover.for about £10k, what do you reckon

£10k gets a nice P38 4.6 Vogue in good nick.
