Renault Clio DCi not starting but will bump start?

A friend of mine is having a problem with his Clio so i thought i'd see if anyone has any suggestions on here.
He has a Clio DCi 80 with 115,000 miles on it. The car has been well serviced and maintained but i would say driven hard.
Now the car has a fault in which it will not start from the starter motor but will bump?
He's changed the starter motor and the battery already i think (he said he's spent £300 and its still not working) but he has been told it's the injectors, could this be true?
He has just offered me the car quite cheap so i may buy it, but have no idea about Diesels!

Could be a bad earth to the engine - those engines won't fire until the start is spinning at a certain RPM, and voltage is good. A bad earth will kill current to the ECU and won't spin the starter fast enough.
That was along the lines of my thinking. There might be an engine electrical fault that's causing either what Helldiver has described, or alternatively an excessive voltage drop during cranking that's preventing the ECU or fuel pump from working properly.Edited by The Wookie on Monday 27th September 10:14
If it won't start off the starter I'd try the cheap things first like Glow Plugs, then go from there.
Try turning the ignition on & off when the GP light goes out. Do this two or three times then try starting it. It may not start at all if the system is completely faulty- i.e. no voltage received at the plugs. But if it starts, then I'd say it's more than probably knackered plugs.
