Should I get it out of my system? Warning MX5 content within

Currently 19 and have been driving for two years, enjoy my little Yaris T sport and its proven itself to be a decent bit of fun.
My parents have an early Eunos 1.6 with bilstein suspension e.t.c and I've driven it a few times now, totally inspired every time.
So, 20 years old with 3 years no claims and I can insure one (mk1 1.6 as the 1.8 is a big hike in insurance) fully comp at a decent price.
What I want to know is would you run one as a daily? I'll have around 5 grand to spend so should be able to get an absolute minter..
Please share your Mk1/Mk2 experiences with me and give me a yay or nay!

I ran a 1.6 mk1 for a year, aged 21-22, t'was my daily too.
I'd honestly say no.
Yes, they're great fun to drive but I couldn't care less about that in winter when I'm freezing my tits off and scraping ice from the inside.
If I were ever to buy another '5 for daily use it'd be a MK2 or older.
MK1s are starting to show their age a bit, and I don't think they are overly suited to daily use.

I was thinking the same thing for a while, could go for a del sol/civic vti or possibly a little turbo I guess, so many options! but insurance knocks most out of the equation They're not going to set your trousers on fire but are probably the most fun you can have at non-licence losing speeds. I had one for almost five years as my only car and didn't regret a second. Four years later I'll walk up to my current car,look at the sun shining and wish I still had the MX5...

Yes, they certainly feel faster than they are.. but nowadays that is definitely not such a bad thing, particularly for younger driversSJobson said:

I agree with this. I've always fancied one but got a Westfield for £5k a few years back on kitcar insurance now ive come full circle and thinking an MX5 on Classic insurance as a bit of fun but then again I think of the Kitcar options for a couple of grand more. Obviously the OP can't use a kitcar as a daily no matter what the diehards will tell you!

I never saw ice in mine and they have the best heater in the business, capable of setting your feet on fire.
My car had a new roof, a weekly clean of the rain rail and drain points, big bags of silca gel and yet it was nearly always frozen on the inside.
Very frustrating, and refreshing when it'd drip on your head.
I would definitely have another MK1, but it would never be a daily driver, and it would be used at weekends only. And only then if I had a garage to keep it in.
If the OP is looking to get one, and has £5k I'd urge him to get a MK2 - more refined, and a better prospect for daily use.

Turns out that it's perfectly reliable and remains fun to drive even round the M42 in rush hour, but it will become less so when, like today, a bit of water drips onto the seat as I open the door and I get to work with slightly damp trousers. The metal gearknob and handbrake levers were quite cold too. All fine when I was thrashing it around 8 months ago in the snow for fun, top down and togged up with a scarf and gloves; less so in a suit and tie, roof up, just trying to get to the office
Buy a Mk1, don’t spend 5k, don’t spend more than 1.5k. This should get you a bloody good, standard car.
Yes scrape ice off the inside in the winter (mine was so iced up last winter that I couldn’t get into it several times) but this is as basic and as simple and as fun motoring as you are going to get.
It’s a great daily driver as long as you don’t need 3up and as long as you are not doing tons of motor way miles. Yes, they are getting old but then they are cheap and easy to fix (buy one that has had the sills sorted)
I have had my Mk1 for 6 years or so, its been my only car for about two years and I do tons of motorway driving as I tend to get jobs with big commutes. Right now it only has to get me from home to Stansted airport (100 miles) then home again once a week. At no point do I ever think it needs more power, it feels more fast in its own right, just not if you’re trying to race anything. It holds its own in Mway traffic at Mway speeds quite happily.
Always starts, first time every time (its on the same battery it had when I got it, not sure if its original) and I really picked up the crapest one that was on sale at the time, so everything that is likely to go wrong has! (new engine £700 fitted btw lol).
If you like it buy it, a £1000 Mk1 in good nick is never going to lose you much cash and should be quite nice. A £5K Mk1/2 is still going to lose money. If you’re worried buy a £600 snotter with faded paint but long MOT (and solid sills) and see if you can live with it.
