Urban speed limits ?

I get messages from the local cycling group occasionally and one of them related to this,

A website dedicated to reducing the urban speed limit to 20 mph,

I am a bit torn here, it would be annoying but there are circumstances where 30 mph is too fast and others where it is already too slow, like roads that got dropped from a 40, that would be really frustrating, crawling along at 20 mph somewhere like that.

I kind of like the idea of sparingly used, targeted 20 mph limits in places identified as being risky to children and other vulnerable people, resedential roads or certain blackspots, but done wrong this would be insane.

Would it slow down the ones that do 50/60 in a thirty already to 30/40 ?

Would 25 by more appropriate ?

You know in ten years time it'll be 10mph if they get away with this. Or 9, so they can apply some infantile rhyme like 'nine is fine'.

The reason 20mph limits exist is because people cannot be trusted to adjust their speed to the conditions.

The road I live on is a narrow 30mph street with cars parked both sides. I rarely drive down there at any more than 20mph because visibility is poor, the road surface is bad and quite frankly, anything more than 20 exposes you to danger.

But it doesn't stop some s going down there at 40 and having near-misses and accidents. A dog was run over last month, but it could easily have been a child. Would these people slow down any more for a 20mph limit? I doubt it to be honest.

And there is a danger that it would end up being a blanket limit that buggers it up in perfectly safe and empty roads.

I seem to remember somewhere that a speedo doesn't even have to read correctly till 25mph so if that is true, then how on earth are they going to enforce a 20mph limit, let alone punish people for exceeding it?

30's dirty.
40's naughty.

20 is too slow and dangerous; people would lose concentration. Appropriate speed for the road conditions. Remove all speed limits.
