Freighting an engine...

Anyone got any ideas how much it would cost to airfreight an engine over from the USA?

It would be a load cheaper to try and get across by sea, it would take a couple of weeks instead of a couple of days.

I really can't see something like a small block V8 being airfreighted for less than 700 or 800 quid due to the volumetric weight.

Carrier pigeon costs a lot less if you can find one strong enough.

Best bet would be to call a UK importer/shipper and let them cost it up. I reckon you could do it for under £500. Forget UPS and the ilk.

Cant recall the exact cost but i priced a set of 18" alloy wheels a couple of months back and it came to around £200 i think??

What engine is it then? It has to be special to consider importing from the US when there are a vast selection of lumps available from mainland Europe.

Should be about £2 a kilo all in, including the weight of the packing material. Volumetric weight won't be an issue because the engine is very dense. UPS will be expensive (even their logistics arm), but I have always had good service from a company called NNR, who are based out of Heathrow.

Seafreight should work out a bit cheaper, but as has been said you will be looking at ten days to two weeks in transit, plus time for customs clearance.

Its an E39 M5, and the price is pretty attractive, but it will all depend on the shipping costs.

We have a container coming out of SC 29223 next Wednesday, if you can get it there in time I will find out if there is any space to squeeze it in, let me know.
