There was one in PH classifieds a while ago, a 1990 G and for less than £4k.

It looked good and I was pretty tempted.

Actually, I'm not to fussed on getting a 55 version, yes it would be lovely, but a 300 or non-AMG V8 would be nice too.

Oh I absolutely love the 55, in fact it is one of my all time favourites. However, if I were to buy one now, my sights need to be set much lower as I'd use it regularly and need to be 'realistic' about running costs.

Why go for a high mileage G Wagen over a Range Rover of the same age?

I hasten to add that's a genuine question I'm not trying to be provocative, what are the pros and cons? My enduring mental image of the G Wagen is being told that they used a Land Rover to tow one out after it got stuck on a publicity event when they first came out.
