As far as I know, the 2.5 has better tuning potential, and the 3.0 has a tendency to munch headgaskets.
I also have heard that the 2.5 twin turbo due to the setup can lead to overheating, which is why they switched the 1JZ-GTE to single turbo in later revisions.
Of course this could be all pub chat and I may be speaking trash.

I've had a couple of the 3l turbos. The torque settings for the head bolts were wrong from the factory so they devoured their head gaskets. Get one that's had the gasket done and the bolts torqued properly and they're bulletproof. The manual box is an absolute joy to use, the auto's not as great but still ok. With a bit of tweaking they can be very, very fast and they handle pretty well into the bargain.

Indeed. The 1JZ was always twin turbo, and the engine is hewn in granite and able to take massive punishment for a stock engine.Of course this could be all pub chat and I may be speaking trash.
The 1JZ models are import only, Toyota only supplied the UK with the 3.0 single turbo complete with chocolate headgasket.

"The "third Generation" of 1JZs were introduced around 1996, still as a 2.5 turbo, but with Toyota's BEAMS architecture.[2] This included a reworked head, newly developed continuously variable valve timing mechanism (VVT-i) , modified water jackets for improved cylinder cooling and newly developed shims with a titanium nitride coating for reduced cam friction [3] . The turbo setup changed from parallel twin turbo (CT12x2) to a single turbo (CT 15B)"

power = 232hp @ 5600rpm, torque = 254ft lbs @ 3200rpm @ 5psi
2.5 Twin Turbo
turbos = ct12a x 2
power = 280hp @ 6200rpm, torque = 269ft lbs @ 4800rpm
Quite a hike in power from the twin turbo model which seem to sell for a little more than the 3.0 and appear rarer.
How easy would it be to bring the 3.0 up to around the same power and maby more?
I know 230bhp wont satify me as im running 250bhp in my 9-5 aero which is a simular weight and my sole purpose is to buy something that will destroy my saab with a little work.

Easy. Upping the boost a small amount is as easy as shimming the wastegate (adding a couple of washers). The standard exhaust and downpipe are really restrictive and swapping them gains you plenty of power. After that you start hitting the fuel cut off. The easiest, and cheapest, way to get around this is to fit the AFM from a Lexus soarer V8 which is a direct bolt on. Match this with some 550cc injectors, the exhaust upgrade and a boost controller will give getting on for 300 horsepower no problem.
