Firstly, sorry, i was struggling for a decent title.

Basically guys im looking for a little help on a situation, I've managed to get my self into;

Im a 20 year old lad and don't live in the best of areas so insurance isn't cheap. I currently drive a 1.2 Corsa B (Tragic i know frown )and I've always fancied a Fiesta Zetec S (as well as other cars) but this is far more affordable than the others at the moment.

My problem is my grandad wants to stop driving in April next year, when his license expires. He wants to give his 1 litre Corsa C to me, but i really don't want it as a car ive dreamt of owning since being 14 will be affordable by then.

My grandad is the sort of guy that likes to give you everything he can i.e you go to his house he will offer you a drink and biscuits, you do't take them and he will be upset by it.

So how can i not take a car off him i don't want? Without offending him. I'd rather he sell it and keep the money for him self, and me get one of the cars ive wanted for a long time, with money i earnt!

Such an awkward situation, but i told him once about it and it seems he forgot about that and keeps pushing it onto me saying things like "Oh, i taxed your new car for you last week".

Also any other suggestions other than a MK5 Zetec S conditions being;

No more than £2200
Upto 1.8
Preferably hatchback
Fun

Cheers guys!

If you can find a tidy one for that (should be easy enough) what about a 1.4 MG ZR? The HGF thing is true, but doesn't happen every 10 minutes like the internet says.

Mine is roughly the same performance wise as my friend's MK5 ZS.

Good cars just need to find a good one and get used to driving it. long gears/peaky power delivery.

I think you should take your grandads car and just live with it for a few months before selling it and getting the car you actually want. He will have given you the car and you will not have made him feel bad by rejecting it or selling it straight away. When you tell him though make a big song and dance about how much you got for it and how it was a perfect stepping stone to your new xxx. I would inflate the selling price a but too so he really does think that you had no other option than to sell.

Thing with that is, taking it off him and selling after a few months i think would feel worse than not accepting it at all. Like he might think i thought it was a crap gift? Not that it is many people would be very grateful for an 04 plate car with 14k on the clock for nothing.

But it's a sticky position. The car ive wanted for years vs. the right thing to to (probabably (in taking the car off him)

Not a nice place to be really.

Edit: But a nice place to be at the same time, if that makes sense!

Dull, sensible advice here. Take the Corsa and keep it for a few years, banking the savings. Ok it's not exactly exciting, but unless you know where you're going in your life and how you're going to get there, having a few grand when you're 20 is extremely useful, a lot more useful than a Zetec S wink

Maybe you could say you already have your eye on a car but offer to sell his and give him half the money and put your half towards the car you want.

Keep your grandads corsa for a year or two and then sell it.

Lets be honest here a fiesta zetec S is a dull crappy hatchback.

Save your money get to 21 when classic and kitcar insurance becomes available and buy something interesting.

Yes, this. Don't pass up a free car, and do keep on saving. By the time you have saved up a decent amount, your insurance costs will have dropped, and your new car fund will be much bigger. These two factors will open up a huge choice of nice cars. Trust me, it's worth the wait. I didn't get my first car until I was 28, despite desperately wanting one since I became a teenager.

C'mon guys; remember when we were young and tomorrow would't wait? The hours spent poring (in my case) over motor bike brochures before ordering one and the seemingly interminable wait before it arrived.

It is a difficult decision because which ever way you look at it there is no easy answer. but, if you accept the car and a couple of months later say for example, you just can't get comfortable at the wheel or somesuch, then you can have the reason to change it. A political answer perhaps, but it might avoid ruffled feathers.

Take the Corsa, then if you do want to change it get a car that is much bigger say an estate or a large hatchback just get a mountain bike or something else to justify it wink

Accept the car graciously, flog it and buy the old fella a mobility scooter with the proceeds, then pimp it with VXR stickers and neons.

04 plate, 14K miles........ffs think man think! take the corsa, enjoy cheap as chips motoring for a few years, it will cost you pennies to insure, run and maintain. save HARD, then in a few years when insurance premiums are more realistic and you have some money in the bank, get a proper car..... trust me, you will look back at fiesta bllody zetec s' and think "i cant believe I really wanted one of those...." as you sit in your Porsche 968/Honda S2000/Lotus Elise......

I was lucky enough to be given my first car, my aunty kept it for 6 months until i turned 17 after my uncle died. It was a Lada Riva Estate 1.3 in Cream!!!!! I was very greatful to have a car but i didnt exactly look after it and didnt much like it at the time so it only lasted 3-4 months. It had far less street cred than a Corsa too so it could be worse. I went on to blow lots of cash on another car that i really wanted but looking back i wish i had saved up while looking after the free car and i would have had a far better car following this. So instead of the XR2i that i bought i would have ended up with something like the Escort RS 2000 or simular for the sake of waiting a little longer.

What i am saying is, accept the car. It will put a smile on the oldboys face and it sounds like you care for the dude so living with what sounds like a pretty good car for 12 months, if not cool, should be worth the effort to make an old man happy. Plus you get the value of the new car and time to save for something a little more special than the Zetec S, your friends would be so jealous!!!!! My nan is the same, she kept trying to give me her 32" TV from the spare room because it is bigger than my 26" box. I accepted in the end and she was well chuffed, although i did feel guilty.

Also, just to add. Consider it from his perspective. The guy is obviously at a point where he has to hang up his driving gloves, imagine how it must feel to sell your well looked after final car you will ever possibly own. Giving it to you, in my eyes, is a far less painful thing to do, if someone asks "how come you dont have a car anymore?" he can say "i gave it to my grandson" with pride, rather than "ihad to sell it because i cant drive it anymore".
