When will they launch a new MX5?
Discussion
I've posted this in General Cars to reach a "wider church" than just the MX5 forum, since someone who doesn't use the MX5 forum may know the answer.
It's been out for five years in it's current form, with a mild facelift a year or two ago.
We must be due a new one soon, anyone know anything?

The Mk3.5 still looks pretty modern and fresh, so I can't see a major requirement for a new one. I suspect Mazda may be working on some sort of electric/hybrid drivetrain for the next one.
A hairdrier?

Usual car cycle is around 7-8 years. But given the simplicity of the format and the lack of competition in the price range I'd expect a more dramatic restyle in another year or so rather than a totally new model.
There have been rumours of a Mk4 before - for instance http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/p/19321/117219...I don't think there will be a major restyle but the Mk3.5 has a few years in it yet.

That looks fantastic. They should make that /\ /\ /\ewenm said:
What's the power output of your hairdryer? Annual running costs? Performance stats? Steering feel and handling balance?
Mine? 228 horse, 0-60 a tad slower than I'd like (6.2s), steering feels good to me (although it's no caterham), annual cost is lower than buying a newer beetle / mini like the missus wanted, IF you factor in depreciation.
No idea what the new mx5 will be like, hopefully not that much heavier, and with a bit more grunt?

I'm all for new cars going electric/hybrid - more petrol left for my cars

Not saying there isn't one.
But does there truly need to be a new one?
Don't fix what ain't broke!
Do you not reckon it is a bit broke now though? But does there truly need to be a new one?

afterall it's got a bit fat and camp in it's old age...
Camp?? How do you mean, is it truly possible to get more camp than a MK1 anyhow?

Mazda go through the range and update them as they go..
We've just got a New Mazda5, it came out in around 2005 and was facelifted in 2008 (Well its launched in a month or so), the New Mazda6 came out in 2007 and has just been facelifted a few months ago. The New Mazda3 came out in 2009 and they've not facelifted that yet, obviously. The CX7 hasn't changed much at all, just a new Diesel engine. The New Mazda2 was released in 2007 and hasn't had a facelift yet but I can see that one being next.
The MX5 MK3 was released end of 2005, and the MK3.5 was released in 2009. So I recon as above 2012. With the Facelifted Mazda2 being done next year.
I think, thats all correct..
